69 runner, which would you prefer?

good old 11 drums all new fresh & tuned
-or-
cheap disk conversion ( under $500 bucks)

I say "cheap" cause that's all I could afford right now

let me have it !!!

Disk will stop better for the first stop... and lots better for the 2'nd, 3'rd... stop. You can get along with drums and caution but everybody stopping in front of you will have a better system. I'd do the inexpensive disc conversion.

new spindles run around 200 bucks a set.
figure another 150 for the calipers and disc's and you should be all set.

IF you wanted to go cheaper, you could pull m-body spindles and pick up the new rotors and calipers and be under 200 for all of it.
But you would be running 10 inch disc's. Still better then the 11 inch drums in stopping power, but not as good as the 11 inch. But you can upgrade pretty easy later. Just different caliper brackets and new rotors.

i'll rock the boat and vote drum.

money is better spent elsewhere on a project car, you can convert to disc at a later date.

drum brakes stop fine, as long as your not continuously threshold braking your good.

I was able to stop with the 6 cyl front brakes up to around 125 mph in the 1/4 but it took some effort At 130 it got to be quite the handfull.I used the SSBC manual std conversion and it's great!! Everything was in the kit and it used my spindles.NO PROBLEM stopping now

'73 up a-body discs, even the small ones. that's what my 70 bee has and it stops way better than with drums. mine are manual but my pedal feel is fine, effortless stopping power.

I'm going to assume, based on the OP, that he has no working brakes at this time (or they need some repairs). So...

I think the extra $200-ish to convert to factory discs (above fixing the drums) is better spent and is cheap investment in protecting the rest of the car from an accident.

The time and $ spent on drumbrakes now, knowing they'll be upgraded later, is wasted. Especially on a project car that might not drive many miles betwen now and later.

As mentioned, do the 11.75 rotors, too! DIRTFT and don't look back.

Parts I seek: driver doorpanel, 65 Sport Fury, prefer black, needs to be 7-8 on 10 scale, might buy set 16" x 6" Dodge truck wheel(s), from early 70s?, takes 9" dogdish - need for a research job so cheaper is better. 69-73 C-body caliper brackets and/or splashields Send a PM.

Since you have a road runner I assume you have the 11" x 3" drums in the front. If that is the case I wouldn't bother with the discs. I did the stainless steel brakes four piston caliper conversion on my 68 runner. I bought there complete kit. I can honstly say that it does not stop any better or quicker with the discs than it did with the stock drums. The only adavantage it might have with the discs is if you make a bunch of stops from a buck twenty plus all in a row, it would probably take longer for the brakes to fade. The big drums on the car are pretty damn good really. If I had it to do over again I wouldn't bother with the conversion.

For a '69 B body car the cheapest setup would be late model disc brakes from a FMJ car or late B body setup. You'll have to dink around finding the correct calipers and hoses, especially if you have an anti-sway bar. Lots of people get confused at this step and use the wrong caliper and then can't get the hoses to fit. Just have to be smarter than the parts!

Another thing to consider is if you plan on running a nice set of wheels on it is that drum brakes don't throw dust.

No longer taking $h!t from anyone!

I have a parts list at home of what I used. It worked great for me. You can look at my signature web site under suspension and see how it looks.

PM me if you want the list. It a list of over the counter parts minus the spindles. I got mine of ebay.
