I'm still trying to learn and analyze my data recorder runs. It's from late last year, an 1/8mile run, 6.944sec@96.40mph, RT.031, launch set for 3k, shift set for 5800 (727 trans with brake). It shows engine rpm, driveshaft rpm, converter slip calculation, and battery voltage. The zero time is set for the first movement of the driveshaft. The converter slip gets down to about 15% on 1/4 mile runs. Any thoughts or comments, especially anyone with data recorder experience? Thanks for your input.

Sorry the attachment is too big, solutions? [Re: 440Brian] #654081

I thought a screen capture would work, but it's about 6100kb. It looks to me like the limit is 700kb for an attachment. I saved it as a screen capture in MS Wordpad (as an RTF file). The data file looks like it's 128kb, but requires the DataMaxx program to open and view. Any suggestions how to make it work?

What I do is paste a "print screen" to paint or I guess any other application, save it as a .jpg and then just attach the pic. You may have to resize it, I use Microsoft Office picture manager.

Tire slipped at about .5 sec into it
what's with the rpm fluctuations? all that bouncing around? do you have traction control?

I wonder about all the noise on the rpm graph too. I don't know what normal is. The rpm wire is connected to the MSD-7AL ignition tach terminal. I don't have any traction control.

Yes, very noisy, it wasn't missing/fouling was it? What about sample rates in the logger configuration ?

I wonder if there is a filter issue on your MSD tach output. What about you're tachometer, what kind, and the wire routing, is it routed next to something that might induce noise ?

The engine is running fine, no misses. I've got a Autometer tach connected to the same terminal on the MSD 7AL-2. The instructions warn about noise and routing the wiring away from anything electrical. Maybe I should try disconnecting the tach for a run? Thanks for confirming the excessive noise.

Traction control that pulls timing shows up like your rpm graph, just not as severe. Since no traction control, RPM line should be more like the driveshaft line.
Start looking for emi/rfi on the tach wiring or even as simple as a loose connection.
BTW,your converter slips to much for my liking.
Have you made a full 1/4 mile pass datalogging?

Even the speed is noisey.... you might try putting
a filter in the power line going to the logger...
both my rpm and speed are much smoother

rpm should look like this..., Open attachment and view full screen, top trace is rpm second driveshaft, bottom is battery voltage.

Thats the way mine looks.... see even his speed has a
lot of noise

What about the ground, does the logger have a good ground ? Does the MSD have a good ground ?

I usually race 1/8mile, but I recorded one 1/4 mile pass last year. The converter slip percentage went down to about 15% in the quarter mile. Where does 15% rate in terms of slippage? I've read posts here before, stating they only had 4% slippage, which is pretty far from where I'm at.
The ignition system has always seemed to work correctly. Sometimes the recorder disk is empty/no files found after a run when I did remember to switch it on. Sounds like I should start looking at the wiring and recorder grounding.

Thanks for posting a picture of your graph. The little bump in driveshaft rpm at the shift, is it just some tire wrap-up or something else? How do you know if the tire lost traction and spun a little?

You will see the speed go up then drop then continue
at the rate of increase like normal... also watch the
rpm go up.... always look at both lines to see if they
correlate

The bump is shift overlap between gears, driveshaft rpm drops for an instant as low and hi are applied simultaneously, this upsets suspension for an instant and slight loss of traction so driveshaft rpm goes up slightly then hooks up again and the pass continues in high gear. I have been told that going to synthetic trans fluid would help minimize this, tried it, didnt work now back to good old type f, I am planning on experimenting with stiffer low servo return springs to try and clean the bump up some.

Mr P Body, do you run a filter on yours and where do you get one? I've never thought I had a need for one before.

For a test, run the power line for the data logger
right to the battery (the battery will act as a filter)
but no I dont run a filter... mine runs nice and clean
EDIT
I do run a filter on my boat for all the electronics
and I think I got it at a Radio Shack or maybe a
boat place... my alt tore up my electronics
