They use a special drum/hub puller.I bought mine on the bay and its SnapOn.It bolts to the wheel studs and there is a center piece that threads down to the part the big nut goes on.Then it gets tightened and you smack the handle that goes on the end with a big hammer. The drums and stub shaft pops off. Then the axles can be unbolted almost like a ewg 8 3/4.They can be a real bear to get off sometimes .Ive done a bunch as mt 57 and the kids 62 had them.Rocky

Bought an early style 8 3/4 rearend with the nut on the outside of the brake drum. How do you remove the axles on those toyes of rearends? I have pulled the cotter pin and removed the nut, but the axle won't slide out. Any ideas?
The axle don't slide out of the drum. The drum has to be pulled off the axle and it is an interference fit that over the years has turned into and stuck/frozen on fit. A lot of heat and even a cutting torch is sometimes needed.
