Recently when I started my 64 dodge with a 73 440 in it, it backfired thru the carb.Since then it has developed a miss through out the RPM range. The harder you hit the gas the worse the miss. Most of the miss can be adjusted out with the distributor but then the car won't start.Could it have jumped a tooth or two on the timing gear? What else can cause these symptoms? Thanks for any information offered.
This would be so much easier if I knew what I was doing...

I would say that it is possibly the power valve if it is an older Holley, but I am not sure about that.
It sounds like timing, almost as if it jumped a tooth or shredded a tooth off of the timimg gear. Is is a stock chain and nylon gear?
Although, if it were the chain, I would expect a bit of backfiring as well.

Have you pulled the spark plugs yet? Does the engine have a ticking sound when running? If so it could be a bent push rod. If not, I doubt that a push rod is bent.

I agree check the spark plugs and you may find a crack or chip due to the backfire or advanced ignition
