Is epoxy primer the new replacement for Self-Etching Primer?
I am taking a car down to bare metal and want to use the right primer.
Thanks

both primers ,etching and epoxy have been around for long time,

for ultimate adhesion it's recommended to apply etching primer prior application of epoxy primer, but it's been proven that epoxy primer has amazing adhesion to bare metal while offering moisture barrier unlike any other primer

I'm not a painter by trade so these are just my experiences and may not mean a damn thing....

I've been using epoxy primer about 20 years and it's been around a lot longer than that. I put it on bare metal. When you use it, make sure you get at least some primer over it the same day because once it gets hard(it's hard) you'll have to rough it up with sandpaper for any paint to stick to it.
I waited month or longer on a '71 roadrunner I painted and had to rough up the DP40. It was the worst thing I've ever sanded because the sp would hardly cut it.

Around these parts,We use a sprayable plastic
polyester primer called "Z-CHROME RUST DEFENDER"
from the Clausen Co. in N.Jersey..We put it on over sand blasted parts, and over panels that have
had filler material applied and rough blocking work done to 40-80 grit stage. I'ts damned expensive, but I wouldn't use anything else now that I've got used to using It.. Eric @ Rickety

Once in bare metal wipe it down real well with Wax and Grease Remover using fresh clean disposable rags. Then spray the Epoxy Primer on. It is made to go onto bare metal. You need to spray some good high quality 2K primer/surfacer over top of it within a 7 day period. I sprayed the 2k primer on the next day when I did mine.
