Is there such thing as a cam button or cam lock for 440's to keep the cam in place?

No, nothing to hold the cam in place really. Unless the aftermarket makes something.

Ok good. I put the new cam in and just started thinking now that I didn't have anything holding the cam in. Just installed the new cam and then the chain.

the oil/dist shaft/gear is the camshaft retainer itself since it sits right in front of the cam on BBs

There are big block button kits, and are highly recommended for roller cam engines.

A Standard Cam is tapered on each lobe to force the lifters to rotate and it also forces the cam towards the rear of the block. It can't move to the rear because the chain sprocket limits the movement.

Roller Cams are not tapered and require a button to keep the cam from moving around.

Be sure to clean and loctite the bolt on the cam though.

But if you had to do it all over again I'm sure you'll use my new cam button next time!

What's the advantage of yours Andy?

I see a number of cam buttons that bolt in place (and they ain't cheap). What's the point of that over one that just pops into the center? It can't come out once its in there.

It is for adjusting the play, movement, in the cam. It it a PITA to get it right otherwise. Andy's set up would make it a snap. WIsh I had the extra money to get one.
