the oil/dist shaft/gear is the camshaft retainer itself since it sits right in front of the cam on BBs

A Standard Cam is tapered on each lobe to force the lifters to rotate and it also forces the cam towards the rear of the block. It can't move to the rear because the chain sprocket limits the movement. Roller Cams are not tapered and require a button to keep the cam from moving around. Be sure to clean and loctite the bolt on the cam though.
