Is there a visual difference in a small block 727 and a bb? Or an early 727 and a later one that will fit a 70's LA 360? A buddy has one that is one the back of an old Hemi out of a hot rod, is there a way to know if it will work behind my 360?

you will have to measure to find the right one.

As for one from an old hemi, depends on how old, and if it is original or not.

The 392, no. 331 and earlier, I think might work.
If it is original though, it leads to a couple of other problems. You cannot use a newer torque converter on it, it will be a ball and trunion drive shaft, and one bolt doesn't line up.

They are different. I think the bottom holes will not line up. I'm sure one of the experts will chime in.

Here are the two Mopar V-8 bellhousing bolt patterns used on TorqueFlite transmission. The big-block (B and RB) pattern is on the left and the small-block (A and LA) is on the right.

If the trans was adapted to an early Hemi it's most likely a SB case which would fit a 360. The bolt holes are the easiest way to tell the difference.

Awesome, thanks! It is a SB and mated with an adapter plate.
