Home Depot has a 5/16" hex paint stirring tool for cheap but I understand it may be too short. If you have an old intermediate shaft/gear grind the teeth back and use a rod w a flat screwdriver type bit on the end

I just finished priming my motor. This is what I have..Don't bother grinding teeth and use a flat blade screwdriver with a drill attached. They are cheap and this eliminates any chance of loose metal from a ground up gear or a broken flat blade getting in your engine....

I found a piece of hex-stock at a hardware store years ago. Do they no longer sell it?

That depends on how meticulous you are. I deburred the gear after grinding the teeth off & there's no loose anything to come off and it took minutes to prepare and I was able to get enough psi for priming purposes by cranking it by hand w a handle. Hardware stores used to commonly stock 5/16" hex rod but it's not as readily available as it used to be

AS SOON as the rods get coated ...I will have a steel and aluminum piece available for almost the cost of what some people are selling the PLAIN ROD for.

Well ... I will have that piece selling for 16 bux or so .. but as soon as I have them available ..I will run a 2 for 1 special .....

And I talked to MP a while back .. they are interested in my piece. P L U S ... the real-hard plastic coating PROTECTS the bushing from damage.

I cut off a 5/16th allen wrench then used a 5/16th's socket and a 12" extension fitted in my drill. Worked like a champ.

Buy a 3/8" round rod and grind a 5/16" hex on one end and your good to go. I did that 20 years ago and have primed many Brad hemis with it with 60 weight oil. It's the cheapest way to make one with no special tools.

I borrowed one from the machine shop. I'm cheap and broke.

Ding ding ding we have a winner (as double R would say ). I'd grind the OD smaller where it goes thru the bronze bushing and wrap some tape around it to make sure it doesn't hit the ID of the bushing.

No need for tape or grinding, it's already round, it can't hurt the bushing. Mine is the the one with yellow tape, the tape is only to identify it as a tool.

The rod from Mancini is only $5.95...I understand about making one but it's not an expensive tool to buy. I don't know how you could mess up the bushing the tool is rigid and even with a drill hanging off the end of it it's still centered in the bushing..
I had mine running at 70lbs...

Yeah, but if you want it now, it's a lot quicker to go to Home depot or somewhere to get something that it is to wait over a week for Mancini's.

Summit has it for $2 more and shows to ship out same day...I agree in a pinch you could make something...I just knew I wanted one and picked it up at a show....

BECAUSE ... if you are doing it alone ...and are barring the motor over ... the sharp hex part of the rod can cut-into the bushing.

SURE .. you can mod an old OEM drive-shaft .. but a hard plastic coated hex rod is far slicker.
