i have a 1968 dodge coronet r/t 440/727 with headers and stock starter, the problem i am having, once the motor is run and the engine at normal temp, when i turn off the auto and try to crank back up, the starter sometimes clicks, i can try the key a couple of times ,then it spins over and cranks, then i can shut off car, and it cranks right up, it is kinda of like hit and miss, however the problem is always once the car has run for at least 5mins, i am thinking that the headers are heating up the starter and causing the problem, what can i put around the starter to protect from heat from the headers?

switch to a mini starter. That will keep it away from the heat and spin the engine over even better the the old style.

i was thinking that too, however, i just spent the 70.00 for the rebuilt starter with life time warranty, the are wanting a 60.00 core charge for mini and about 80.00 for the starter, i was hoping i could make what i have work.

Are you referring to the mini high torque starters I see advertised? They say half the weight of a stock starter. That sounds like a plus.

Spend $20 on a junkyard mini-starter from a 90's dodge pickup or ram van. It's the same thing as the aftermarket minis you will buy. I use one and it works great. I thought my problem with my original was a dying starter or a connection problem. Turns out it was a charging issue. Battery not charging properly and a hot motor is harder to turn over.

I had a simular problem. My car would always start cold...like new. ONCE in a blue moon I would turn the key and get nothing. I would short the starter solonoid and get going and it wouldn't happen again for months..maybe over a year. Also would start slow. Eventually the solonoid gave out, took over 3 years, EXTREMELY intermittent, so I repleced it and starter turns faster and I have no more problems
