Ok, I managed to get the nut off the pitman arm, and the arm is disconnected from the center link. So now's the 'fun' part - getting the arm pulled off the steering box shaft. I'm trying to get it off using a 2-arm gear puller but it's not budging so far. Would I be better of using something like this or has anyone managed to do it with a gear puller?

Again- thanks!
David

Yes "that" is what you need and you might call your parts house & see if they have it to rent. It'd be cheaper for you as you rarely use it. Pitman arms get on there tight

You can get one at the parts store a lot cheaper than that. I think I paid $15 for mine at O'Reilly's. Like Robert said most bigger parts stores will loan the tool with a deposit and not charge for the use of it.

I used a good hand held grinder on the side of it. Don't grind all the way through it. As I got about 7/8 of the way through it popped and I gave it a tap and it fell off. Good luck.

Ok, thanks- I was able to pull the center link off with the gear puller but I figured with the splines on the pitman arm that it was going to require a LOT more force to get that off....

I'll ask the local parts stores to see if they rent specifically a pitman arm puller. I think the O'Reillys near me does rent- and if not I've got Advance and Autozone, too....

Only on a chevy. On a mopar, The joint is in the pitman arm.
The center link is the piece that doesn't wear on most mopars.

You might try and put some heat to it also. When it gets hot enough, it will expand some. Keep the puller on it when heating but be careful to stay out of the way when it comes off. You will not need too much tension on the puller during this time. Also watch out for other things that might cause you to have the hottest Mopar around[ gas leaks etc.] If you don't feel safe with the heat, you can also use an air hammer with the hammer type head to work on the sides of the arm when the puller is in place. Still be VERY careful as if its this stuck, it most likely will come off with quite a pop.

Well, to get to the seal- the box is leaking power steering fluid. Before I disconnected the center link I had someone turn the steering wheel back and forth while I checked for any play on the pitman arm ball joint and it looked good. I just need to find a new boot for it though...

Well I don't have a air hammer (or compressor) so I can't do that. I have thought of using a propane torch but the area's kinda greasy. I suppose I could do it relatively safely if I degrease the area first, but I'll try that as a last resort....

For steering arm to PS shaft I have used a good sized crafstman 2 jaw puller (somewhere between 6"-8"). It looks big for the job but it is needed.

I loosen the nut but leave it on then put quite a bit of pressure on the puller. Next hit the side of the arm and the shaft of the puller a sharp blow with a hammer. It always takes the hammer blow to get it off for me.

I judt did this on my Duster and she didn't come willingly. I used one of these (loaner tool from local auto parts shop) with some liquid-wrench and plenty of heat from a propane torch. Once it bugded it was no problem the rest of the way off.
