I wanna put an original tuff wheel in my 70 Charger. I already have the smooth adapter but not the wheel yet.

In Mopar Action (June 2008) they put a tuff wheel in a 69 Runner but the use a modified adapter (cut on a lathe and then welded together again to make it shorter).

Is this really necessary (they claim that using the original adapter puts the wheel to close to your chest)?

Was the tuff wheel a mid year option on 70 B-bodies?

thanks

The reason they had to modify the can to work on a '69 car is that the steering column is different between the two years. The '69 has the ignition switch on the dash and the column where the steering wheel mounts is a smaller diameter.

They don't modify the diameter, they cut out a piece to make it shorter.

Was the tuff wheel available on any 70 b-body (mid year option)?

I took a tuff wheel off a 70 rr in a junkyard about 20 years ago. I know the can was shorter than an e-body and I don't know if it was factory or not. It was a bench seat car and felt like it was in the right place for comfort. It's been on the garage wall ever since, I thought about having the wheel restored before the new repo's came out. It's the only one I,ve seen on a 70 so it may have not been factory.

The smooth can is shorter than the corrugated e-body can (3" vs. 5"). in MA they also talk about a can that was used on B vans (and the old direct connection kit) that is 1 3/8" short.
So there are 3 different factory cans that can be used for a tuff wheel.

According to Ehrenberg the shortest can should be used if you wanna put a tuff wheel in a b-body.
I've seen pictures of 2nd gen Chargers with tuff wheels but I can't recall if any car had a shorter can than the 3" can.

Quoting from MA:
"A/B-body stock tuff hub adapters were 3" thick. This put the wheel too close to almost everybody's chest. B-vans, and the old Direct Connection kit, used a short (1 3/8") can. This put the wheel right about where the Grant setup does. Years ago, we modified a stock can by sectioning it on a lathe and welding it back together at 1 3/4". Just about perfect!"

This is a picture of what I'm told is a tuff wheel adapter for a tilt column. Can anyone verify that?

This is a picture of the tuff wheel in my '71 Charger. The car originally came with a rimblow wheel which will go back in when the car is done. I like the smaller diameter of the tuff wheel though it does block some gauges.

the shorter ( smooth ) can makes accidentally to meet your fingers with the dash pad on E bodies. Thought to drive due the reduced gap there. Fits perfect on column though

agreed! 70s are another story, and meets the dimension with the tuff wheel adaptor, due all are with ign key on column

I don't think tuff wheels were mid year option on Bs ?... or yes ?
