The input push rod (the one on the back-side that connects to the pedal) is retained in the plunger with a small plastic ring, naturally the plastic ring breaks when the push rod is removed.

Where to get that l'il plastic ring??? Or is there a "roadside fix" that works?

Thanx for the link, however, a power brake input push rod uses a different retainer than a manual brake rod; why, I have no idea. The power unit uses a plastic ring that is about 1/4 the thickness of the manual unit rubber piece.

Pic is of the remnants of the plastic ring next to a single edge razor blade.

Or have you used the rubber piece on a power unit??

Maybe find a rubber o-ring that size.

The fsm says the ring is 'sposed to shear on disassembly, but there is no mention of replacing it on reassembly!!

I sliced a piece 1/4" fuel line thin and used that, all the while, my trusty l'il assortment box of o-rings sat discreetly on the shelf laughing their buns off!!!! So sharp I am!!!!

No fun replacing a power brake booster on a 4 speed car.
