I am putting a 318 in a /6 dart. The heads I'm using have the studs on the ends, in good shape. Is there any reason I should pull them? I don't want to if I don't have to.

I have another abody with a smallblock but if they gotta come out I want to know now while the heads are on the bench, not after I put in the motor and the headers won't go on or something.

If it matters it is a '73 swinger with power steering, 318 LA motor and old eagle headers (same routing as hooker 1 5/8" comp headers)

thanks

Yes because it is way easier to work on. Leave as many in as you can.

I would leave them in. It's a lot easier to hang the headers or manifolds with them in. They also hold water or anti-freeze so if you pull them have a bucket ready.

Leave them in - if you have the necessary clearance the headers will need to slip over them by the brakes, gearbox, blower motor etc. Check first.

the only reason i know to remove the exhaust studs is to help with header installation. that extra inch or so that they stick out makes a BIG difference with headers. if you can jack up the motor and get it done keep the two end ones in as they are wet into water jackets on a small block. i recently went to aftermarket heads on my bb that no longer go into the waterjackets and headers are easier to re&re now.

Agree studs are better for all the reasons posted. The only challenge is knowing which ones can stay in and still let you get the headers on. The only benefit of taking them out now is that you can trial fit the headers and add studs back later where possible. I think it is easier to pull them on the bench than it would be in the car. If you're pretty sure studs will work with your headers, go for it and leave them in.

Assuming they have been in the heads for 40 years, they aint coming out without a fight, and/ or a big machine shop bill... but sometime headers take a big swing right out of the port and there is no getting a standard nut in the place, or the tube is too large to clear a standard size...

Ive taken them right out many times by heating up the area with a torch. Doesnt have to be anywhere near red

I know when I installed my summit headers on my 440, it would have been a real pita to get them into place with studs. Not too hard to line up the gasket with the bolts and headers, although helpful with an extra person.
