Isn't there an alternative to the popular Mopar .600 springs/ heavy retainer? I was thinking I had seen one mentioned that is made for a GM V6. I'm looking for a modest seat/open pressure increase 20-30 lbs for use with .511 lift using my 1.7 rockers. Kind of new territory for me and was wondering what is available and opinions on what will work.

I'm still using the stock cam right now (.464,.471 198 @.050 int, not much more on exhaust)and noticed that I am losing rpm before valve float onset.I've lost about 300 rpms thus far and need a cheap alternative. Would like to keep the beehive shape and be able to use the stock retianer or at least one that is not as large as the retainers for the .600 springs.

I'll get'em if I have to, but just thought I had read about an alternative.

Cam is an R/T +10 I picked up dirt cheap.

I think there is a set of GM beehive v6 springs for sale in the Moparts small block section.

Without looking up specs, Hughes Engines has springs and retainers that may be what you are looking for. Their 1110 springs are $94.40 and retainers are $62.00.

That was me selling the GM V6 valve springs. They're brand new from Clevite, was asking 80 shipped but I'll take $70 shipped for em. You'll need the matching retainers from a 94+ GM 3.1/3.4 or LS1 retainers. The general consensus is theyre good for ~.500 lift but I think HotRodDave and some others on here used a much higher lift cam with them.

Youre other option is the hughes 1110 or mopar .525 springs. You can save some money on the retainers by using the retainers from a 2.2/2.5l Chrysler engine with these

Anyone have any pressure specs from testing these? It may have dropped (I suspect) but I had 280 open and 90 on the seat with .060 shims under stock Sealed Power replacement valvesprings. Will this give me more?

I'm interested but just want to see if I can get more info. Don't want to end up in the same boat.

from a thread in the archives...

"blueprint" specs were free length of 1.94", and spring rate of 365lb/in, so with the 1.6" IH I measured with the 3100 retainers, that would yield a seat pressure of 124lb, and a .5" lift pressure of 306lb."

That rate he gave is WAY wrong using the specs given on the Rockauto link. (no free length is needed) I used the closed and open height difference in lbs. Then subtracted the listed installed height from the open height and broke it down to X amount lbs per .005.

1.8295lbs per .005 is what it came up to.

.075 shorter IH for the Magnum so...
.075/.005 = 15

So 15 x 1.8259 = 27.3885lbs

Take the Sealed power seat pressure listed

72lbs + 27.3885lbs = 99.38 seat pressure

At ~.515 gross lift... .515/.005=103

103 x 1.8259 = ~188 lbs

188lbs + 99.38 seat pressure = ~287lbs open pressure.

~99 seat, 287 open

I like the seat pressure but coil bind clearance would be insufficient is seems by what he observed for my cam's gross lift with a 1.7 rocker. Would like the same gain in lbs on the open pressure over stock + .060 shim.

Would be ok with a lower lift cam.

I found some Comp 26986-16 beehive springs that appear by dimension they would drop in (just went under "chrysler", "273-360" up to year 2000 and they were the only behive listed there by application. Of course they are pricey and beyond the quality of this very mild combo.

I guess I'll have to call Hughes and get more info on their 1110's.

Do you use the dampner? Don't see how the dampner would have a seat of it's own or at least have enough clearance inside the spring.

I was considering trying a set of the stock magnum springs with a cam that had a mild lobe intensity. My thinking was if they were shimmed high enough to run close to coil bind, the seat and open pressures may be high enough for a mild lobe. I was unable to find any specs for the stock springs.

Anyone have the seat and open pressure (at corresponding seat and open heights) for the stock magnum spring?

The stock spring I mention had about 20K miles on it. From memory a .060 shim was worth about 5lbs on the seat at IH 1.625 and 10lbs open at .471 lift. I tested these on a buddy's spring pressure checker at the shop and I did compensate for retainer height when arriving at these numbers. The .060 shim wasn't worth a whole lot. With .120 worth of shims you cut down on max lift a good deal. With my stock cam with 1.7's...these aren't doing the job anymore. A fresh set may help, but I don't want to swap all the time.

the GM 3100 spring "blueprint" info I got was I think from napa online. irreguardless, you can see the instron test on the link I got from testing a used junkyard one, ~330 lb/in rate, and ~90-100 lb seat pressure.

for my magnum heads, I ended up using hughes 1110 springs with 2.2L retainers. after a valve job, I had an IH of 1.63" with this combo, so I have ~.550" lift capacity and ~140-145lb closed pressure. runs fine with my cam, which is 259 adv, 208@.050 lobe lift, 127@.2 lobe lift, and .316" gross lobe lift. I'm running stock magnum rockers. it's a stock cam reground by bullet with their HR259/316 lobe
