I picked up a used air compressor locally for $175. Its an Ingersol rand T10 with a 60 gallon tank. I ran the electric and got it up and running last week. It seems fine. Loads up fast and will restart when I bleed the pressure off. Its been 20 yrs since I used air tools. What do I need to get going with some simple tools? I would like to get a die grinder / DA sander and a paint gun. What brand air tools are decent quality and a good value? Do you still have to oil air tools? I seem to remember doing that. What kind of hose is recommended and what size? Do I need a regulator or do all tools come with an internal regulator? I plan to do some light painting with it to. Do I need a filter and dryer on the air coming out of the tank? If so, where do I buy one? thanks for the help in advance. Tom

It's best to have the reg at the end of your piping also.
Only if you're painting, otherwise you'd run everything else at max pressure. If you have 20 outlets would you want 20 regulators ... I think not!
The water separator point makes sense ... maybe that's why mine is always dry except for the most humid of days!

sounds like you got a deal on that compressor. As far as tools I have found it varies one might have the best impact while another might have a better air rachet while die grinders and such might be same or simular between different companies just relabeled. For instance I personal think the best Impact out there is the Ingersol titaniums snap-on and mac have their own versions but the IR is a better value. Same with 90 degree die grinders. Now for air rachets Mac has a real nice enclosed head model that i use.Air hammer I like Snap-on. and Snap-on again for the 1/2 air drill there has gear reduction that about breaks your wrist when it grabs something. So its hard to say whats best the name brands are all good quaility. But as a mechanic word get around usauly about whats the best and what brand lacking a little compared to others As far as oil using the tools every day I oil when I remeber probaly onc every two weeks and I have not had any troubles

The closer the reg is to the tool being used the better. Max pressure is only useful for tire work in my shop and paint.
If you have your reg set at say 90 psi and then send it through 25' of pipe and then say 25' of hose, do you think your gonna have 90 psi? And it's not good to try to set it at 100 and then hope you have 90 at the other end.
BTW it's the other way around when I paint, I want max prssure in my hose and use the reg on the paint gun to set my air at the gun. Big mistake guys make is double regulating it painting and sometimes you lose volume needed to really atomize the paint.

Don't forget to drain the water from the tank. There should be a valve at the bottom of the tank. A good investment is a automatic vent valve. I had a air tank blow up on me because the previous owner never drained the tank. lucky I was outside when it blew up in my garage as it took out a few lites and put a hole in the ceiling.
Wow you don't hear about too often... glad you weren't hurt.

Good point, will do. I'll also check the integrity of the bottom pet [Edited by Moparts - Family Friendly Site - Keep it clean] with the pressure off the tank

How would the tank blow-up? .... the compressor would just CYCLE on and off very quickly.

I agree water in the tank should not make the air tank blow up? You might have had a bad pressure regulator switch that kept the compressor running accompanied by a bad high pressure switch that would not releive the tank pressure.
Which if you don't know the condition of the safety valves you might want to replace them to avoid problems.
