If they are thick enough, can they be turned?

I've done it. We live in Michigan and the rotors tend to rust in the grooves.
I sandblast them before turning to remove the rust filling them.

Yes they can be turned but will a shop turn them? That is the question. It is hard on the carbide tip when it gets to the slot and back onto the rotor. Sometimes the carbide tip breaks or skips on the rotor. Many places will not turn your rotor because of this. Carbide tips are not cheap.

Allen Here's a novel idea, let's not throw a bunch of parts at the car hoping it will fix the problem and instead spend a little time diagnosing it first. Life was a little easier when I was just a wrench.

Having turned a few (more than a thousand) rotors and drums in an earlier life, I would think not.

Seems to me the slots/ holes in a vented rotor would be deadly to tools, unless you have a grinder, and few shops do. Grinding them would take a LONG time.

(What do they cost to replace?)

Grinding them will also give you the least amount of problems with pad noise and break in. Un fortunately even cheap rotors out of the box new are now being turned instead of ground.

Someone that knows what they're doing should have no problem turning them. Slow the feed down and the carbide tips will run no risk of damage. I'd skip the local brake and muffler shops and check out a shop that services racers. As some local roundy-round boys where they'd go to get rotors turned.

I had mine turned (2000 Chrysler 300M). The shop had not issues with them but I have noticed a "whirring" kind of frequency now when I apply the brakes

Most likely the carbide bit went bad during the cut. Or the feed was too fast. If I decide to cut rotors with holes in them (friends only) I will chamfer the holes before the cut, but If I have to cut the rotors with my own bits (meaning my own money) I would not likely do it. Bits do cost money and cutting rotors with holes does wear out the bit faster. Plus no guarantes on finnish quality.

The whirrr is a common complaint, no harm other then the noise Make sure they're installed on the correct side of the car, they should be directional

After we turned them we would use an angle grinder with a buffing pad and while the rotor was turning on the lathe we would buff them, worked well and no complaints about noise.

The only proper way to cut rotors, is to have them Blanchard ground, regardless of surface treatment, ie: vented, drilled, slotted etc,....take the time and find a brake shop in your area that grinds/ blanchards rotors

Thanks for info, thought I'd ask before I took it apart or bought new rotors. Now I can start asking the shops.
