hey guys, been a while since ive posted on here, you guys called it when i got the little honda... them things are addicting, and affordable lol.

well, we will be moving here soon, which is a perfect time to get my motor to work so i can get it together.

basically ill be building this 72 440 i got.

id like to run 11.50's or so to get used to the car, but i want to build the motor to handle more than that... so i can go faster .

anybody got some ideas on a nice, pump gas friendly, iron headed(could possibly end up with a set of eddy heads) 440, that could get into the 10s with a couple changes...?

ehh, strokers kind of out of the question as of now...

think of this as a budget build.

oh, and pump gas would be nice, but if i have to run cam2, its not biggy, itll just empty my wallet faster lol.

im thinking stock rods, arp bolts, 906 heads(cleaned up, milled a little), nice set of pistons. all new bearings, new rings, nice cam, my intake, and ill rebuild the 850 holley i have, and that would maybe get me where i want to be.

i need to check out the archives, i thought i saw a 500hp 440 build in there a while back..

I have a 500 HP, 544 Ft Lbs torque , in my garage now for sale. It has a set of ported big valve 906 heads,Comp Cams XE284 HL cam and lifters, RAS 1.6 Ductile iron rockers, Manton sereis 3 3/8 x .084 pushrods, Speed Pro pistons and file to fit rings, 9.44 to 1 comp ratio, LY rods and ARP bolts, stock forged steel crank with .017 increase stroke Eddy RPM Performer intake with a Holley 950 HP carb,Moroso 4 hole one inch spacer, 1970-71 Hemi/440 6 pak oil pan and pick up with a homemade crankshaft scraper. nothing exotic Use that combination if you want I had that motor in my Duster(3400 LBs. with me in it) for one weekend at the track, it went 11:30s at 119+ MPH spinning the tires

Just use some SRP pistons with your factory rods. Get your 906's redone and put a MP 509 cam with stock rockers to get 11.50's. Then change the cam, rockers and heads to get in the 10's later.

Hi John, I remember reading that buildup in the archives, but couldn't find it again. It was similar to what I started out with, 440 + .030, stock crank, 440 rods, TRW pistons, home-ported 906 heads, Mopar 590 cam, P2806077 springs, isky iron rockers, TM7 intake, 850 Holley, gold box ignition. Ran 10.60's in summer heat in my Duster, probably had over 500 runs on it without ever breaking anything.

Your E/T requirments are very much reachable on a budget.
Here is a run down ona similar engine from my Father-In-laws Duster, which should be a similar weight. It actually runs low 11's, but we are currently adding Indy heads but anyways.
Its a .030 440, stock crank, and recon rods with good bolts. It has ported 452 heads with big valves. 2.14- 1.81 valve size. It has a old MCcandless solid flat tappet Comp cam, which is a smaller version of the .650, this one is .575/282. Along with the cam is a set of Isky Ductile rocker arm set. The pistons are the KB 237 which is a flat top with a 2"+ compression height. The pistons are about .012 down in the hole or so.
M1 intake and a 9375 Dominator, 4.88 gears and a old GER 4000+ converter which to y surprise works awesome.
We had a 4.10 sure grip under it and drove it on the street. We sure did make a hand full of local Mustang, and Camaro owners mad.

Hi John, congrats on moving forward with the family jewel. In my humble opinion, if you have to buy a crank and pistons anyway, a stroker is no more expensive than going stock-like. It doesn't have to be a 572. Actually, there are ton of great deals on already-built engines in the classifieds here. Go with somebody that has a goor reputation. 99.9% of the guys on here are honest. It's ok to trust, just know what you are buying. Congrats and look us up for the wires when it's time..

well, i know my motor has a cast crank, and im pretty sure i have a set of LY(sixpack?) rods sitting on the shelf. also have a weiand intake, not sure which, but it looks nice, the 850 holley i believe, a nice set of headers, i have a cool set of valve covers, i have harland sharp rockers that may needs some shims and bolts but thats not a big deal, um i got a set of 906 heads and could possibly get a set of edelbrocks(84cc chamber i think).

i know the cast crank isnt the best, but im thinking if i stick one together with some decent stuff, itll hold up for a while and i can get out on the track, then i can build a bad ass stroker motor on the side

i just need some piston/ring suggestions, and maybe a porting template for the 906's, bearing suggestions, cam, also need a distributor(thinking msd pro billet), just those types of things.

ive heard more talk of old dominion shutting down after this season, id like to go out and run my dads old OD number before they shut the doors!

You would probably be money ahead just by buying Cabs engine that he has for sale. Great deal for what you are getting. Its turn key and ready to drop in your rig.

10.53 @ 125mph. 1.37 60 foot. Caltracs and Monoleafs, AFCO shocks.

Heads by INDIO MOTOR MACHINE; IMM.
CP Pistons, PC Carbs.

Thanks Josh. Josh has my combo right as it is 906 heads and the intake is the Street Dominator. It has run 11.49 at 3700 lbs in my 63 and your Cuda should be much lighter so I think mid to low 11's should be no sweat with my combo in your Cuda. Ron

The only thing you'll gain from new pistons is a bit of compression. Is it worth all that on an economy build?-I don't think so. If you just plain put together what you have , you can acheive your goals. Spend the money on a good used 8" convertor.

I agree with the "8" converter
mine went 12 teens with 9 1/2 conveter
went to an "8" car went 11.80's with stock 452's
on a 9:1 440 at 3300lbs very simple setup
your car should be lighter than mine 11.50's should be obtained with very little effort with what you have & the right converter

ill be honest, im pretty sure the car isnt the lightest, if i remember right its like 3200+, probably heavier than that.

i got a converter thats been 10.30s in a car similar to mine, so ill probably just use it til i can get something better.

also, good idea on the pistons. i might just have the block zero decked, honed, and tanked, thatll atleast give me a tiny bit more compression with the factory pistons, though they are like 1/8in in the hole lol...

heres a few pics of what im working with...

and a picture that i really like of the car

Look into putting a complete 440 Source Short block Stroker motor in that sweet car of yours...
For a cheap build for under 4 thousand you can't beat that price. and the stealth heads are a good peice as well..

If that block is standard boar then a 505 is what that car needs to run the 10.00 class all day long...
