Well I'm sending my 71 Challenger R/T off to paint and was wondering if the black on the tail panel is painted BEFORE the car is painted in body color?

Also where does the black end?

This is a rubber bumper car so the paint order for that is it black first or is it black over body color?

Thanks
Morty

71 Challenger Six Pack Survivor. Like under 40K miles or something. Don't know were this car ended up.

It looks like black over gold.

Looks like gold over black to me. It would have been much easier to mask off a tail panel before the body was painted then it would have been to mask off an entire car to paint the tailpanel.

I agree, black first.

Think of all the masking supplies the factory would have wasted to mask the whole car & then add the black.

OK

And how far down did the black go?

this is the engineering drawing for a 70 E-body Fairly certain the 71's were typically the same.
This should give you an idea of the amount of blackout.

Thanks Pete!

But if I painted it that way won't I get an Orange line between the bumper and the car.

Tailpanel is from an original white '71 383 R/T auto with fluorescent orange R/T sidestripes.

Paint is original.

Note that the left side quarter moulding is still on there, it is the mostly blacked out style

And one more - replicating the original pattern found on this car....

Looks like the black is wrapped up more into the trunk cavity on that yellow car.

I straightened the line out on the yellow car

White tailpanel is from a different R/T and still sitting in my stash

No black paint below the lights, looks like the mask was really simple

MB,

I think you and I need to become really good friends.

If you could just verify the area between the bumper and trim panel panle you don't see any body color.

YYZ - Thanks for the pic.

Morty

I agree with the others, black first, then body color on the sheetmetal.

Not sure whether black or body color came first on the bumper.

Fall Fling 2004.

You can see the passenger side blackout line went a little off course at the factory

I'll post better pics individually so that won't mess up the page viewing. Please click the attachment to get the picture larger.

Drivers side of the gold 71 Challenger. It's a little easier to make out with color's that contrast a lot with black.
