I was look at my 71' roadrunner's brakes a while back and checking out the drums that still have a lot of the red paint from the factory to go with the magnum wheels.

It looks like these drums have never been popped open. It was taken off the road in 1977 so I know that these drums have not been opened. So after I popped one of the front drums a cloud of dust came fly out. My question is is there any hazards from doing this or this dust that came flying out?

Asbestos, ever hear of that?

Allen Here's a novel idea, let's not throw a bunch of parts at the car hoping it will fix the problem and instead spend a little time diagnosing it first. Life was a little easier when I was just a wrench.

Yes I was curious cause my old man told me if I see a puff of dust come out, put the drum back on as quick as possible if I dont have a mask on. Being that I was born in 90', sorry I was around asbestos, aid lead paint chips, or played with mercury out of the thermometers

As long as you dont do it on a daily basis, you will probably survive.

I wouldn't worry about it. Prolonged exposure has been linked to some health issues, but I doubt an occasional event like you describe would pose any serious health risk.

You would have far more to worry about dropping it on your foot.

I was just curious. I have probably been exposed to more nuclear radiation just cause my old man worked on the reactors on the carriers for years. That's his excuse for why I'm tall. So asbestos is like pixie dust lol

Asbestos was a big problem for ship yard workers, as it was used alot there (remember hearing alot about it, my dad worked at a ship yard in San Pedro for awhile when I was a little kid..)

Breathing it once might not kill you, but why add problems for your lungs if you don't need too

One of those paper painters masks is good enough to protect you from thr little stuff you would inhale doing a brake job.

Wear a n95 dust mask at least and after removing the drum, shoot brake clean over everything. That stuff collects in your lungs over a lifetime as it never gets cleared like dust and pollen. It seems fine till later when you're an old fart and you can't breath as well as when you were young.

Better safe than sorry. Wear a respirator or N95 dust mask at least.

I have spots on my lungs from asbestos.I started doing brakes and such in the 60s.Between that and the mill it was bad.A few years ago they tried TCTAs by saying if it got hot and crystalized it wasnt bad.I say bull.Rocky
