I'm finally getting started on accumulating parts to replace the Slant 6/904/7.25 in my Duster and with a 360/833OD/8.75. It'll see occassional street use (shows, etc.) and a half dozen trips to the track each year. I have both 3.23 and 4.10 SG centers, so I'll probably be using the 4.10's for the track and the 3.23's and possibly even a 2.76 peg-leg around town.

Here's what I've got, so far ;

Low mile '74 truck 360 - approx 80,000.
833OD, bellhousing, pedals, linkage, shifter
B-Body 8 3/4 axle and lots of chunks.
800 or 850 TQ or 650 or 800 Edelbrock carb - take your pick. Personally, I like the TQ.
Weiand aluminum manifold or iron TQ manifold from my Li'l Red.

And here's what I plan to get ;

Hooker Competition Headers or Summit knockoffs
Clutch, etc.
Cam and lifters
Rebuild stock heads with 2.02/1.60 valves and get the machinist to leave them sitting high to eat up some chamber volume. Also, mill .020 or so.

I'm hoping with the new valves and milling, I'll get between 8.5 and 9.0 compression. Based on that, and my intake and exhaust specs above, what cam should I go with?

I'm looking at either the Summit 276 int./286 exh/114 lobe sep or their 262 int./272 exh/112 lobe sep.

I'm not building a full-on race car, just something that'll burn some rubber and run a respectable time at the strip, say high 14's for now. For now, I'm trying to stay real low-buck. Somewhere down the road, I might upgrade to a stroker motor when funds allow, but for now, that's not in the cards.

Opinions?

I think you could use a little more than the xe262 with your 4 speed and 4.10 gears.
I'm currently running a Lunati with 230@50 duration and .480 lift. it will work with stock rockers and give good power to about 6000.
A set of KB107 pistons should give you 9:1 or a little better. Should put you in the 14's easy. When do you plan to do your build?

hughes "whiplash" would be nice for what you want,IMO

its for a low CR stock engine

idles like a funny car

early intake closeing,to build cyl pressure and not kill the torque

I run a lunati 60710 roller cam with comp 901-16 springs all stock valve train,been 6200 and no valve float

buddy runs the lunati 292/292 in a stock 360,little soft on the bottom but it a screamer with a good choppy chop to it

XE262...ran it in a stock long block 360 in my 5th ave with a little bowl and pushrod pinch porting on the stock 1.88 heads, RPM intake, 600 eddie, and headers. ran real strong, could keep up with a 5.7L LX car from a roll (which should've put my car in the low-mid 14's) and it is ~4200 lbs with me in it. I'm running an A500 with 3.55's.

I think you'll find the 3.23 and 26" tall tires will be the best overall gear for your car with the OD tranny.

4.10's will be a waste, 1st gear is 3.09 in the OD tranny's, with 4.10's and shortish tires, 1st will be useless.

if I were you, I'd probably use a t-quad and stock manifold.

I'd also look at a lunati voodoo 60401 or 60402. all of these cams can use comp 901 springs.

another option, if you're buying springs, valves, and getting the heads reworked would be to buy these heads from hughes. they'll flow ~15-20% better than your redone stock heads, have good springs already, and have a 63cc chamber, that with a thin Mr. gasket head gasket should net you somewhere around 8.7:1. you'll need to buy different pushrods, and some magnum rockers (used run $20-50, new can be had for ~ $80).

I'd keep my cam recommendations with this combo, too.

another cam that comes recommended from others is the crower 267 dur cam.

I have the Summit K6901 in my 77 360 with magnum heads/air gap/600 holley...A833 1:1 and 3.23's...has tons of power. If you do run a bigger cam like this, be prepared to recurve your distributor. Once you do that, it will run great. I run 15 degrees initial timing and 35 total with a pretty quick curve.
