I'm considering buying a repro 69 GTX trunk trim panel. I have a decent original but it's pitted. Has anybody here ever restored one of these? Is it possible to grind the pitting down and have it re-chromed? If so, can it be painted after being chromed? I wouldn't mind trying to restore it before paying almost $700 for a reproduction. Also, do the repros fit good? I've seen a few for sale at Carlisle but I don't think I've seen one mounted on a trunklid. thanks...

Buy the repop. Yes it can be fixed but will show all the waves from sanding out the pits. If you send it out to be restored it will cost more then a repop. And having anything chromed with any kind of quiality is expensive. You won't save any money . And unless you send it out to be professionally redone you won't be happy with the results.

I've had numerous excellant used ones and also 2 NOS ones over the years. Last NOS one sold for about $2500 (for a certain 4spd Blue Hemi gtx vert) at a time when having one redone was in the $1500 range.

I've seen redone ones that look,,,,well,,,,,ok. For me I'd just buy a repop and save the costs involved and aggravation of dealing with a plater to do potmetal.
The repops are real nice, not perfect but probably good enough for most owners with a higher level driver or a local shows type car. they would never make muster for an all out OE level car.

imo , the argent is too smooth, and the 2 raised ridges of chrome on each side of the red band is too low compared to an original

sounds like I'm going to buy a repop. My car is driver quality so the extra $$ for a truly perfect piece isn't really needed. Now for another question...who carries them? I've done a little looking around and most companies don't have them. Has anybody bought a repop one? if so, from where? thanks...sorry for all the amateur questions....

There is a guy on ebay selling repop 69 finish panels. Local guy here bought one. Looks real good. I'd find his listings and ask for some good pics then decide. I think he had with or with out emblem.

There are a number of people selling them out there. I would buy them direct from Joel at Metro. He sells the seconds to these other vendors. Joel has done a real good job with these and I would go direct to him

Any reason I can't find any repro 69 GTX rear trim panels? None on ebay, none listed at any parts suppliers. Am I doing something wrong?

Metro Parts has them made in small runs.
I do not know if they have any in stock currently.
Call 912-383-0172

If not call Matt at MCB and see if he has any on hand.
