About 2 years ago, my buddy had me look at this engine. It's a 1956 industrial engine. I had a pad attached to the side of the block with all the assembly specs, which now disapeared. From what I was told, the engine had very low miles on it, then went to the shop where it was disassembled and used for tech for the students about 20 years ago. There isn't any block numbers on it, so I don't know what size it is. Anybody have some insight?

There should be numbers stamped in the top of the block in front of the valley cover.

The intake casting number is listed for a '52-'54 DeSoto 276 engine. The 276 is a low-deck engine,as is the 291,so the intake fits both.Post the block casting # from the back of the block, inside the bellhousing area. That will verify which cid block it is.

it did say on the tag (before it got lost) that it was a dodge and was set up for dodge industrial use. Was stored most of it's life and barely used, so I would probably agreee with that I saw on the tag.

It is a low-deck DeSoto motor.Water outlet on the intake, motor mount ears on the block sides are indicators.Low deck Dodge engines have no mount ears and have the water outlet in the front cover. Can you get the block casting number?

It doesnt look like there is a stamped number in front of the valley cover. It could very well be an industrial Desoto. 19, 19A,(276) or 19B (291)

I've been busy, so hopefully I can get down there wednesday and take pics of the rods and heads. Those casting numbers will probably help identify the engine.

Go ahead and use the pics, should be some interesting comments you'll get on it. My buddy will be back this week, so hoping to get some numbers off the heads and other parts.
