I recently bought a 440 for a project car. It is already .030 over and overall looks pretty good. Upon putting it on the stand, Ive come across a few questions....

First, I noticed the left side, just below the starter hole a non threaded boss for a bolt to go through for the bellhousing is chipped. Will this be an issue? Can/Should I fix it?? See attached picture....

Second question I have regards the pistons. They all have these two small notches facing forward. Im not sure if its just the forward notation mark or??? Heres a picture.....

ahhh , ya , thats going to be an issue , theres a bolt that holds the bellhousing to the engine and judging by its size , 7/16 hardware , its needed ?

the dots probably are to tell you where the front is.

how deep in the hole is that piston ?

Is there an easy way I can fix that?? Im not sure how deep the piston is. Thats not at TDC by the way...its just the first one I saw when I uncovered it...Im really hoping to be able to use this engine. The engine I was originally going to use had a motor mount ear busted off, and I didnt discover that until after I had it machined....now this!!

And if you can't do it yourself, your machine shop should be able to no problem.

ROFL I hope not. Or else you'd be measuring your depth with a yard stick!

Did you have the old piece? Or did you just fill it in and re-drill or???

Turned a piece of solid stock on the lathe to the correct o.d. then drilled to the correct i.d.

Then cut that piece in half and welded ....Depends on your situation..I TIG welded mine with the correct wire..Half my hole was still there..If yours is broke off completely u will need to bolt the trans on to use for reference to makesure its linedup correctley...Hope this helps

Mine is half there still. I just wasnt sure since it was cast if I needed to use a piece of cast?? Can I just use a piece of steel round stock?I was told you can TIG cast if you use pure nickel rod...This true??

Steel is fine, but remember its cast steel, not cast iron...Theres a diff...

Actually u dont use nickel, its called Ni-Rod.

Mines welded with copper .....Not many people know of that trick...

ABSOLUTELY NOT! Mopar blocks and heads are gray cast iron, not cast steel. Period. There is a difference.

You can weld the cast iron with a nickel rod, preheat and a little patience.
