I'm redoing the trunk on my '73 Dart Sport 340. I'd like to refinish the fuel filler tube in the correct fashion. I believe these tubes came with a galvanized metallic finish from the factory. What is the correct way to do the refinishing? Is there a paint/coating that comes close to the original finish, or are we looking at plating of some kind?

Thanks

The filler tube is dipped in lead... Often you can lightly buff it with 0000 steel wool & the finish will come back close to OE.. I've seen plenty of them painted.. It usually looks like crap, but some are better than others.. Either way try steelwool first..

I have a 5 gallon pail of Evaporust and had good results a few weeks ago. It was a Chevy filler tube but let one end soak for a week, then soaked the other end. It didn't alter the factory finish at all, just removed the oxidation.
