My understanding is that the pin in the SG unit has to be removed when adding axles with green bearings.
If that is the case how does the pin come out? Do I need to take the SG unit apart? Probably a dumb question but ya'll need a laugh occasionally.

I thought all you had to do was remove the buttons not the shaft.

Depends on whether it's a clutch type or cone type Sure-Grip. The clutch type can be removed without disasssembly, just drive out the roll pin that holds the two halves together; the cone type must be split to remove the thrust block.

There is debate on the need to remove the thrust pin/block, I think it's a good idea but others.........

Thank you John! Is the SG that you can't see the springs through the sides the clutch type?
I don't know anything about SGs...be gentle:)

Yes, if there isn't a large opening with visible springs it's the clutch type.

Hi Richard! John, with what Richard posted, can I get the thrust spacers out without removing the roll pin? Do the thrust spacers just set in there or are the held in place by something?

I have run greens with the 489 cone sg for 8 yrs

I swaped in the 742 open and used a cold chisle to break the thust button(3 piece and accounted for)to keep from R&R the carrier

been running it that way for 1 1/2yrs so far

like said...some do...some dont...your call

if you have buttons...I would remove them and run it

get the better m-400 green bearings also

The two halves of the thrust buttons are held by the "lock pin" shown in the pic I posted.

Without disassembling anything, use a long pin punch to drive out the roll pin and the two halves will separate. The roll pin is usually broken after extended use and each half just falls out.

I agree with the 'fall out'. Usually a long magnet will get them out.
