I am wondering how much you can take the deck down on a 440 block before you have to start machining the intake,I am running the performer rpm with the rpm heads And I want to use the 440source stroker kit, 4.250 crank,7.100 rods,17cc dish 1.480 c.d. pistons which leaves the pistons .015 down in the hole and gives me 10.05 to 1 with the 84cc heads with the .039 head gasket and a .054 quench.I am wanting close to a .040 quench and 10.50 to 1 comp.So I need to either bring the deck down or order custom pistons,so thats why I am asking. Thanks guys

Since the stock gasket is .021 cutting .018 off the deck would put the heads back where they belong due to the thicker head gasket....

FWIW the OE deck surface often isn't quite where it should be, the spec is 10.725 but often it will be much higher, mine were 10.74X & varied at all four corners... So rather than request a certian # be removed the better approach is to request a # from the crank centerline.. And the # I used was 10.705...

Thanks again 1 wild rt thats what I will do.Now I just have to bang my head so more on what cam to go with,I was thinking the xe295hl comp.but not sure (69 super bee, auto 3.55 gears ,512 ci, will get stall conv.).Mostly street but at the strip sometimes.I am looking for the choppy idle with driveability because people like that at the car shows.Any ideas on cam choice?I drive the car a lot in the summer and its never on a trailer.

With a 512 thats a pretty good cam... I'm running a little less with my 512 (Comp XE282S) but I like to keep a low profile..

What c.i. motor do you have and how is the idle?I was a little scared of the solid cams just because of them going flat and having to adj, them all the time,is that true?

what 1 wild RT said, Nothing will be exactly what the listed dimention is. Mill the head deck to get quench then set the heads/head gaskets on the decks and mockup the intake w valley pan and check the head/intake intake port(s) alignment w valley pan then either mill the head intake face or the intake for a perfect fit/port alignment. For either of these 2 checks fyi the head gasket only compresses a couple of thou so mock it up & see where you're at.

Mine is still just a pile of parts... I have done trial assembly, I want to do a few more small tweaks, the car isn't painted yet anyway so.... As far as cams going flat, hydraulics will do that too... I have EDM'd lifters & have a Nitrided cam... I have cases of GM EOS & I'm looking into a Voodoo doll to hang under my hood.. I thought long & hard about a roller but the bronze distributor gear & fuel pump pushrod issues made me feel like a standard flat tappet was the better street option...

I have the same engine that you are about to build, same heads, intake and stroker kit. I went with the comp XS290S solid and it works well. I used a cometic 0.027" MLS head gasket to increase compression and it gives me 0.042" quench. The deck was pretty square on my block so the thinner gasket saved me the cost of machining.

Mine & yours are very similar, 440 Source kit, I had the machine shop check everything throughly & they found no real issues, the rear main seal surface needed polishing & the snout to damper fit needed tweaking... I have the 17cc dish pistons, 84cc Edelbrocks, MSD Pro Billet, Performer RPM, a Holley 830DP It should be a very docile street motor but still able to scare the crap outta me...

Thanks, mick, more great imfo,so how choppy is the idle with the 290 solid and how hard does she run?

It idles at 850rpm with 9in vacuum, choppy sound but not too radical. The car weighs 3800# and it runs low 12's with 60 foot times in the 1.8's. Best to date is 12.03 @ 116. I'm working on the 60 foot times but it's not easy with a 4 speed.
