I did a lot of asking about this topic a couple months back. I have a 71' 383 HP and it has a carter on it.
One issue was that there was a quality issue with holley back in the late 60's and early 70's. For some reason, can't remember what part specifically, but the carb over time would start leaking gas and was a hazard to causing car fires. The replacement from the dealers was the carter carb after chrysler realized the issue.
Another thing is whether your car has AC or not. I've looked at 440's and 383's and why they both had either holley or carter. Mine has a carter because it has AC so I'm guessing the body of the holley carb interfered with our massive AC compressors. I had a few guys tell me my car came with a holley, which is a possibility but from what I found it came with a carter.

I bought a 70 383 4 spd cuda off the showroom in 1970 & it had AC and the Holley 735 CFM carb. I remember cause I pulled the AC out, installed a foam air cleaner, cut the scoops open in the hood & installed headers. Wonder if meeting smog requiremants was a factor between the Carter or Holley?

'70 roadrunner convertible 383/4speed, 8/1969 build date Edelbrock aluminum intake with.....a HOLLEY. So, now do we throw away the book (again?) No A/C car for sure...and that's what came with the car. Early production with left over '69 parts? It's just too weird.

NONE of the factory MOPAR single 4bbl HOLLEYs were 735cfm.
I believe the 4160 series HOLLEYS MOPAR used are 600cfm.

I believe that in 70 most 383 HPs came with Holleys. Don't know about other years.
I had a '70 roadrunner 383 auto, it also had a Holley, and it was original
That's not a 69 though.

I don't doubt this, but sure seems strange that they would do one thing in 69 and then the exact opposite thing in 70. Ma Mopar always leaves you guessing

I was told that the 69' road runner auto a/c 330hp used the Carter 4638. Is this wrong?

Yes the AVS-4638S was used on the 330 hp engines.
The 1969 Shop Manual lists the following carburetors and the engine/transmision:
I added the horsepower ratings obtained from several different sourcec.
AVS-4615S 383/manual/330 AVS-4616S 383/automatic/330 AVS-4638S 383/automatic/330 AVS-4711S 383/manual/335 AVS-4682S 383/automatic/335 AVS-4617S 440/manual/375 AVS-4616S 440/automatic/375 AVS-4640S 440/automatic/375 Holly R4166A 440/automatic/350
It lists no 383/Holly combination.
