Anyone running a 2.28 first gear ratio in there 727 ? Considering going to this ratio to reduce torque multiplication to make launching a little more consistent. Any experience with this switch ? Car will have 4.56 with 33 tall tire 572 B1 motor in a duster (roughly 2900 lbs at starting line)
thanks

I have considered it for my car too. The cost needs to be compared to switching to a PG trans, which should also work in our application. The PG change will be costlier, but that gear set for a 727 could go a long way toward the conversion. Two sources of alternative ratios for the 727: http://www.aandatrans.com/http://www.gotranzact.com/I exchanged a couple emails with TranzAct last fall, but he wouldn't answer two questions important to me. 1) What price do they charge 2) Do they have parts on the shelf to ship, or will I wait... From A&A website: 727 5-Gear Steel Front Straight Cut Planetary and 4-Gear Aluminum Rear Planetary 2.28/1.45/1:1 $1,750.00

thanks, I have been talking with Pro Trans about the gear set, I like my TF just want to settle the launch down and I am not sure that I need to go with straight cut gears from what I understand I can simply replace the rear planetary with a 4 gear billet carrier with the new ratio

There was someone here, I think it was B1Cuda out of Pennsylvania, that was having issues with alternative 1st gear ratios out of TranzAct(?). Please correct me if I am mistaken but, someone here did post their troubles.
It was us that had all the problems, I dont recommend 2.28 gears on a high tq engine, we never got more than 60' without breaking something. Ended up going w/ a glide and have been very, very happy...

Chuck from Best Machine ran 2.28 gears in his AM car with a 572" B1-MC motor running 8.50's at 3350 lbs and believe he had good luck with it once the trans was built right.

I ran a 2.28 gearset for years behind a 572..and it worked fine..I switched back to the 2.45..the car was heavy at 3350..and liked the stock gear better..

IF your 572 liked a 2.45 better, you were not making enough power j/k
We ran a best of 8.84 with the 727 and switched to a Glide and went 8.61 @ 160 at 3375# with a car that left like a baby

I remember he was having some issues along the way......I also think he utilized an A&A gear set. A&A/Pro Trans etc will also tell you that the 2.28 gear set is not as strong as a 2.45 and they become vulnerable around 800 ft/lbs of torque.

I run it in my sb stroker Dart. I've had other issues so I can't say that it helped. However. That being said, I don't run a lot of gear, and I didn't lose any top end mph, gained likely; and I do like the dig with the speed.............
Damn! I dropped my change.............

Wow, good to know. I thought the whole idea behind going from 2.45 to 2.28 was because you had lots of torque! I guess in a lighter car (less than 3000?) it might survive better than 800 ft-lbs in a 3700 lb car.

It was a low budget motor..made around 850...all out of the box stuff with -1's..
Best pass with that motor was a 9.31 at 145..at 3310..wish I had it back..LOL
