Nikasil cylinder plating question

I have been involved in racing dirt bikes for most of my life. Most MX bikes have the cylinder plated with nikasil. It reduces friction adds lubrircation. It is somewhat expensive but given the money people put into race engines how come it is not used on car engines?

If it is a chrome plating many of the Porsche(SP?) motors came with that as well as other aircraft and other air cooled motors used in industry and racing. if it is not the same then

Mr.Cab Racing and winning with Mopars since 1964. (Old F--t, Huh)

nikasil is different than hard chrome we had them on our cyls when i raced liquid cooled snowmobiles.

Nikasil is carbide based I think.......I do know that it is harder than a hookers heart and it would take special rings to make work.
I do not see why it wouldn't work on eight holes and would be amazed if it hasn't been tried in Pro Stock .......almost certainly in F-1.

It has been used in race engines to save the block. The theoretical advantages you mention don't seem to show up as horsepower in a gasoline powered V8, so at $3500 for a set of 8 liners I'd be sure it's a block worth saving.

I believe Nikasil is typically used on an aluminum bore to give it a harder wear surface. That's why motor cycles and snowmobiles use it. I believe BMW started using it in the 90's on their all aluminum V8's to solve a wear problem. Aftermarket aluminum muscle blocks use an iron liner to get a hard surface... that can also be bored. There would be little need or benefit on an iron bore.

Mercury Marine has used the Nikasil plating on some of the Hi-perf outboards since about 1988-89. The bore does not wear. The piston skirt does start to colapse. Our rule of thumb at the Lake X test facility was to replace pistons after 75-100 hrs of use. No honing...just slap it together n go! These engines tipically spent ALL their time at about 8200 rpm. Great stuff! Also used by Porsche and Formula 1 teams.
