I have a guy who is selling what is supposed to be a big block 727 trans from a '65 Imperial. I was setting up to go out to look at it and most likely pick it up (I am out of state for a funeral, and he is about an hour and a half from the hotel I am staying at), and he just told me it isn't a slip yoke, but a fixed yoke trans (he was sure it was a slip yoke when I asked before I left, but he hadn't looked at it in a few months). I was planning on using this trans for my 440 swap in my '64 Polara. Any way I can still use this trans in my car? Will a late model 727 tailshaft and housing swap with this one? I'm kinda in a crunch for time since I am leaving tomorrow morning, and can't really research this myself, since I am out of town and don't have reliable internet access. (I am using the hotel's computer, since they have a malfunctioning access point in my room, and no WiFi to use my laptop)

Thanks in advance for any info you can help me with.

i beleive its gona be 65 only for your app.,but small block out put shaft and housing will fit so you could still make it have a slip yoke.but your 64 is already flange type.

Would the output shaft be the same as a ball and trunion? The guy sent me a picture of the tailshaft, and it has a standard yoke on it, but it is an u-joint style. I'm wondering if the Imp had a different style driveshaft, or if this thing is from a truck.

There really isn't anything wrong with a bolt-on d-shaft transmission.

Your 64 has a 318 in it ? ... that is a simple bolt-in then.

In '65 the Imperial was the only 727 that didn't change over to the slip yoke.

If your '64 Polara has a console shift the Imperial trans will work as is but if it's pushbutton the valve body is different. You can swap the valve body out of the original '64 SB trans into the '65 or you can use the '65 valve body with your pushbuttons but you'll have to use the '65 cable adjustment procedure, not the '64 procedure.

Tailshaft and housing parts will not interchange between 65 and 66, they totally changed and will not fit. You can use the 65 small block output shaft and housing on the 65 BB trans case to get rid of the ball and trunion.

It was good enough for 9 sec A/FX cars.
