I know that there is always controversy with tapered axle bearings vs. Green Bearings for the 8 3/4.
What are the symptoms of Green bearings starting to go bad??
Noise/hummmn in a straight line? More noise when turning in one direction, ot even just doing a lane change?? Are my Greenies going or my Sure Grip?

They really growl..!!
I have customers with green brgs that are over 15 years old and still fine...The couple that I've heard that were bad were very noticeable

THANKS!
I knew one guy who had his changed every year ~just to play it safe~. Mine have been in for about 4 years. Either way, I guess the axles will have to come out so I can check the bearings regardless. If the bearings are OK, then it means on to the center section.

A check of the end play should tell you alot too.

If there is any, there is a problem.

If there isn't, and the bearing feels smooth, then it's not in the green.

Frank, when one of mine was going, I did not hear it, but I am about half deaf! I had my axels out for a punkin change and could definatley feel roughness when turning by hand.

frank if you have a cone type and the bearings didn't go bad then you probably lost the sure grip , if it's making noise the spiders are probably siezed on the shaf tand spinning in the case , that will only make noise cornering , straight line it should be quiet as long as your tires are the same height.

Greens and a cone type

When one of mine when out, it got pretty loud. It growled as described. Drove the car for a lot of miles before I finally fixed it.

John, are you saying that Green bearing's with a Cone type sure grip is a bad thing? Just curious because i've got a 489/cone style and i used green bearing's because some fool took the end play adjuster off my passenger side and i couldn't find a new one. Sorry for hijacking.

Thanks for the tip. I'll check for end play first. I won't have a chance until next week. B-I-G price difference between a couple new bearings and a center section rebuild................

JohnRR-the SureGrip in the GTS is NOT the cone type.

no not sayingthe 2 together are bad , but i'm scared just thinking about it .

knowing that frank races the car and its a 69 i was thinking it still had a cone type , which i should have known better .

FYI my dart has a cone type it in that i flog , but thats only because i haven't gotten around to swapping it out yet

Not being familiar with the Green bearings, can you use the old take-the-weight-off-one-side to see if the noise lessens?

CORRECT you are!!!
End play on the left side. Which is why it howled whenever I turned right or just changed lanes to the right. Pulled the axles today and will have a new set pressed on tomorrow!!

I have gone through a couple of sets. My life cycle is short, I went back to taper bearings after I was ready to learn another experiment.

You had to drag up a thread that is a year and a half old for this?

I'm sure there is a more current Green bearing debate that could have been taken part in

doctor diff

mine went 9 yrs then one side went out, growled a lot never noticed it to much thinking it was the cone sg or r&p..

when I noticed smoke behind me on the road,I got to looking, leaked at the bearing and was smoking from it heating up...

one side had lots of slop to make both the o-ring and axle tube seal leak..other side tight and most likly did not need replaced..but a pair is a pair in my book..

never got oil on the drum and shoes though

replaced both and been back at it hard for a few miles now

not running the axle tube seals this go round either,no leaks yet

the ones with the crimped on flange are the ones that are junk

you want the m-400 that the doc sells,IMHO

cant beat the price or the shipping

The MP's suck , the DR. Diffs are better , if a green can be better ... unless I'm running a spool or change centers on a bi-weekely basis Greens have no place in a street car . One thing is greens might need a shorter axle so they aren't being sideloded, which they are not designed for, not a problem with a clutch type , leave out the thrust pins , cone type or one legger with a THRUST BLOCK ... different issue .
