Thanks for the hint - It would be exactly what I'm looking for... and very reasonable priced.
But they've lost the guy that made them and have only some left in stock that are purple heart - that's to special for me.
I'll go with plastic and keep an eye on them.
Funny that this does not make a market that people would get their immitates replaced with real wood.
After all these years having a 440 I realized that this means having an attitude... and a budget.

There is/was a market, but it was a small one because few were willing to pay enough to make hand made wood grips a profitable venture. I used to sell them as well, Domingo was having a guy in Peru make them who was a custom guitar maker, they were stunningly beautiful and made the right way with brass inserts and machine screws to hold them on,not just wood screws right into raw wood, but they carried a hefty price tag. The people that bought them were thrilled but at $129.00 retail they didn't sell well and we barely made a profit. The problem is also inventory. Everyone wanted a different color or type of wood, and no two were alike.
I was impressed with Gunslingers simulated wood plastic grips, they did a nice job with those, nice smooth high gloss finish with simlulated wood burl looked very similar to the real wood grips I used to sell.

Here is mine. I got them from Gunslinger at a trade show/swap meet. Hand carved wood. He let me go thru alot of his grips to get the pair I wanted. It appears he doesn't have anymore at the present though... -Michael

I made my own. it may not be a perfect replication, or as smooth, but I'm happy with it. I saw it as a challenge, and took my time hand carving them, and did some minor sanding when done.
I used african ebony hardwood, for the extreme light/dark streaks, but that stuff was SUPER HARD to carve! no splinters, and the "chips" all came off in little shiny flakes, talk about DENSE wood!
I used nothing but a pocket knife and some light sanding, mostly so that I could say I whittled it with a pocket knife.
if I had it to do over again, I'd definitely look at using some sort of power tool like a dremel to do the heavy work.

and my new console that I made to replace the chintzy wood one, which I have since repainted flat black with a light misting of silver to give it a bit of flake/sparkle, similar to the AAR/TA hoods.

Here's an installed pic,I have some loose ones around here somewhere, I'll see if I can find one for a pic. They are just a basic outer wall knurled inner threaded insert, you can get them at any nut and bolt supply
thanks scott !
