On my Superbird, if you have the headlights off with the engine running (doors closed), once you shut the engine off, the headlight doors will eventually open up.

Vacuum opens and closes the doors. It just runs thru the pod the opisite direction.
Correct,...the reserve can is just that, reserve, if the pod has a leak the doors will slowly open, not quite all the way, just a lazy eye look, that's because of the safety spring, that in the event of failure to raise, the owner was instructed to diconnect the vac harness splices located at the radiator apron/yoke to release the vacumm holding the pod in the closed position, the safety spring was to allow the lites to open "somewhat" for night driving in an emergency,.....but it dosen't allways work as planned ![](/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh2.gif)

How does the vacuum operated lights work on a Superbird? Does the light switch when turned on, relieve vacuum pressure and pop open the lights?
Monc the dash light switch works inconjuction with a vacumm slide switch, vacumm is applied to either side of the pod to raise or close the headlite door, based on switch position, the white vacumm slide switch "breaks vacumm and exhausts it as it is switched from open to close and vise/versa, it just re-applies vacumm to the side of the pods port thats needed to either raise/lower the lites

Ok, thanks for the replies everyone. So if there was a leak, it would make sense that the lights would slowly open over time with the car shut off, right?
Just like this.

Correct,....but the leak could be ANYWHERE!....brittle vacumm lines, bad switch, bad/cracked "t's" connectors, bad vac reserve can, bad light vacumm pods,....best to use a mity vac and vac gauge, and isolate the system componet by componet until you find the problem,....just like finding an electrical short,....miserable work, Good Luck ![](/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beer.gif)
