Oh
I am taking my steering column apart (71 charger). I used a wheel puller to take off the Wheel and removed the Turn Signal.

I removed the 3 outer screws and the Snap Ring on the steering shaft, the book shows a tool called a Steering Column Separator Tool. I can not find this tool and wonder what everyone else does.

I need to get this apart so it can be painted along with dash and given back to shop so I can get my car from metal shop.
Thanks for the help

I studied the picture in the service manual and built my own using a piece of pipe and a couple pieces of metal and a nut. It is a very simple tool to make if you have a welder. Use the three original screws you took out to bolt it in place.

This is full size. Print it out, make sure the O.D. is 2 1/16" and use it as a template. The screw holes are 3/16" or #10.

All I did was take a piece of pipe and weld a nut on the the top and a large washer on the bottom and drilled the holes for the three screws, and got a long bolt. I could show you pics, but you would cringe at how crude it is! lol. It is VERY simple. Keep in mind, you need a tool that does the exact opposite when you go back together. I haven't made that one yet. The one to take it apart is like a steering wheel puller in minature. The one to put it back together is a small press. Just a nut and bolt on a pipe. if you really still want pics, I will take them and post. It looks like a caveman made it, but it worked and was free.

Yours is very nice! I didn't have a welder at the time and had a farmer buddy stick weld mine.

They are listed in the moparts tools and equiptment section 1st quarter. They have a a fine thread 1/2 20 and are made from HRS steel. I have other tools for your steering column rebuild project. Save money and do it yourself... Thanks John 843-324-3586 jrivinius@sc.rr.com www.stores.ebay.com/johnscudashop
