98 2500 V10 truck. Has 114,000 miles and had no problems with oil pressure until 2 days ago. Pressure is fine once it comes up, but when first firing the truck in the morning or after sitting it can take up to 30 seconds to finally pick up pressure. The pump also seems to occasionally be making a noise similar to a power steering pump going out.

Anyone run across a problem like this on the V10 before? Oil has been changed since the problem came up and a new Fram filter put on. No difference in the problem.

Throw that fram filter away and get a good one like wix.

I totally agree! Example: old 318 92 Ramcharger, changed the oil a couple of winters ago, used a Fram filter and noticed the same issue, I thought the engine was going bad, asked some friends their thoughts, even bought a new oil pump to go in it...then here on this board, many members were mentioning their displeasure with fram filters. I then bought a NAPA gold filter (Wix I believe) and the problem went away. I was elated!

I will try changing the filter, but the problem started with a different filter to begin with and just continued with the Fram.

i have an 01 ram with a v10 and 137k @ idle it occasionally will lose all oil pressure, give it gas and it comes back up and stays, i always use wix filters and a filter mag on top of that, i quit worrying about as it is intermittent but at the same time wouldent mind installing a new oil pump with the mileage that is on it.

I have always used nothing but Wix & Factory Mopar filters on V-10. (Got a case of OEM filters for free once). Mine is a 96 with 120+ now. I have noticed I have the same problem with mine also. Never worried to much about it though & just figured it was more the gauge just catching up.

Changed the oil again last night after only 120 miles on the old. Does not look good. Oil was already very dark and appeared to have a lot of metallic particles in it. I went with a lighter weight oil hoping it would be a little easier for the pump to pick up when cold and put on a Wix filter. Its still taking longer than it should for the pressure to come up when cold, but it is better. At this point its just a matter of how long is it going to live. Might run forever like this, or it could die tomorrow.

You probably ought to go with a thicker oil like 20w50 if you found metallic particles. Might be excessive clearance in the bearings from wear causing the drop in pressure and the thicker oil will help bring the pressure back up.

You really dont want it to drop like that.

If you're willing to work, it wouldnt hurt to pull the pan, inspect the pickup screen, and see if it's plugged with crap. That can happen since the screens are fine and your engine is getting up there in miles. Might be some sludge in there.

But while you're in there you could also change the pump.

Excessive bearing clearance, plugged pickup screen, bad pump, bad sender. Could be any one of the four, but I almost want to rule out the sender. They do this from time to time, but it sounds more to me lie you have a legitimate pressure issue and not an electrical issue with the sender.

Good luck.

While the pan is off you could pull a rod cap and a main cap to check the bearing condition.

Oil pressure relief is sticking causing the oil pressure problem. It is in the front cover under the large plug on the drivers side.It the cover is galled you may need to replace the cover.Replace the piston and spring if it hasn't caused any serious damage.

The oil pressure is fine once it comes up, it just takes forever for it to pick up oil on initial start up or after it has been sitting for any length of time. I started to pull the pan last night, but after looking at it the pan almost sits on the cross member and I dont have a way here to hold the engine up to get room to remove it.

Damn.

It's like that with my smallblock dakota too.
I had to pull the engine to get to it because I couldnt get the pan to clear the bellhousing of the trans. The crossmember was in the way like yours. I remember more room being in my 2500, but I might not be remembering correctly.

I am unsure if undoing the motor mounts and jacking, or lifting the motor with a picker would help. That wouldnt work on my dakota. I dont know if it would work on the ram. you would know better than me.

I use a floor jack with a piece of 4x4 under the pulley to jack mine engine up.

You should check out the oil pump. I have a friend that had to replace his 98 V-10 because of a broken oil pump rotor.

I would check the pressure with a known good mechanical guage. Seen many slow and erratic sending units. I think the motor has to come out for pan removal or the tranny removed for the pan to come back. I am not 100 percent sure but that is a long pan.
