Who is running a non-steel stator in their convertor with a trans-brake? How is it holding up?

I have two convertors:
1) Turbo Action 10" 3800 Stall
2) Dynamic 9.5" 4500 Stall

I bought a trans-brake last year, but have not installed it yet. Too worried about damaging the convertor and tearing up parts, so I have just kept foot braking it. I know the convertor companies recommend a steel stator in a trans-brake application, but would like to hear some real world experience on this.

when my trans was being serviced last i was shown an alloy stator in a transbrake trans. i don't know what it looked like when it was new but when compared to my steel stator, my steel unit looked like new & the alloy looked like it had pitting on it.

Who has a story of hurting their convertor doing this? How much HP and how many passes before it let go?

A couple of years ago,I asked Paul at Turbo Action (through Tony aka Quicktree) about using my J converter with a brake. He checked the serial number on it and said "you have a model with an aluminum stator, absolutely do not use it with a brake"
So from the man himself,no.

There has to be more than one person doing this. Anybody else??

Thanks for all replies so far. I know what the convertor manufacturers say, I am just wanting to know who is doing it, and how long their convertor has lasted.

thats kinda funny when I ordered my converter from Paul him self he asked why I wanted a steel stator said it wasn't needed for a brake but I ordered it anyway.

totally depends on the hp/torque and combo. if I were going to use a tbrake I would order the steel stator just to be on the safe side like Woody did. even though it may not need it. nice try though.

Hi Tony!,
It has been a while, the old J is still holding up well!
The Challenger has been through a lot of changes over the last couple years,I don't know where it was at when I talked to you!
I used to run a 440 and ran 10.80's or so,last year I put a stroker smallblock in it.So far, 10.21@ 132.We have a little tuning to go yet.

The old J converter and 440 are going into the new car I'm putting together for my wife.
Thanks for asking!
Keith

over 300 9 sec passes on my J conv.

Paul also to me NO for the aluminum when I had it restalled, no issues so far...I went with aluminum again.

I currently run a PTC though...the J is a spare now.

I have used two different convertors on a torqueflite using a brake, and two different glide convertors with a brake. All have had aluminum stators. I had one stator failure that was an infant mortality (broke on the third pass)in the first convertor I used with a brake and a 727, it was a defect and was replaced free by Coan. I have not had a problem with a stator since that issue in 1993. When I went to a brake I was told the "J" convertor was too weak, not because the stator was aluminum though. Most everyone I know racing are using aluminum stators.

Great info guys. Thank you for all of the replies!

If mine breaks using an aluminum stator, I will report back in and let you guys know.

If it breaks, it will most likely be because it rolled a sprag. That's what usually breaks them. But since the sprags have become more reliable, it doesn't happen as often.

Since I use a spragless converter, I don't even worry about it.

Chris..
