10 BTDC would be a good start(checked w vac adv unhooked/hose plugged). Possibly 12 or even 15 as long as it does not ping ever ( most likely to on hot/dry days) nor want to kick back when cranking and when experimenting note your total (dont want over 35 again w vac adv unhooked/hose plugged). Bottom line as much as it will take wo ANY trace of pinging.

I agree with the previous post but I would
start with 5 Deg before and work from there.

There is an excellent writeup of this at
www.4secondsflat.com (FBO Ignition)....

Good luck...

You'll want to use a dialback timing light to make sure your total doesn't go over 35-36 in the mechanical advance (vacuum advance unhooked). Most small block distributors have 15R or 17R plates (30 & 34 degrees of timing in the distributor respectively)...so you'll need to weld up the slots to make them shorter.

I made my 15R plate into a 10R plate. Then i set my timing to 15 deg BTDC. I now have 35 total and my engine is happy.

I'd bet around 10-12 on a stock engine, since my engine is modified.

It depends on how the distributor is setup. Mine used to be set at 12-14. With a distributor that advances too fast I can't have it more then about 4.
