Currently I drive on the street,P285/70r15 BF Goodrich Radial T/A,mounted on 15x8 steel wheels.
At the track,these tires spun badly behind a 4-speed,4:10 3,760 lbs.(with me in it)383 b-body.
What size drag tire should I get to fit within the stock wheel well opening?
I would like to use a set of 15x7 steel plain wheels instead of the 15x8 magnum 500 wheels I have on it now.
The car ran a best of 13.04 @ 110MPH spinning badly with poor sixty foot times.(Can post poor time slips on request.)
I like the looks of a tall tire, and would like to run taller than a p275/60r15,but choices are limited.
What do you guys suggest?

What kind of car? Slicks or drag radials? I know a 28x9 slick would work on those wheels and should fit under most b-bodies.

By the way my bro has this size on a 67 Satellite that runs 11.4xx with a 383 auto and 4.30 gears.

I run 30 x 9 Hoosier radial slicks on my 63 with 4.30's. And I drive it all the time at 60 mph. Ron

I would shoot for a 28 x 8 or 9 x 15, no more width than 9 and try and stay as close to 28 inch as you can. I don't know what is available in a 26, only go there if you can find a soft sidewall slick. Try and find an 8 or 9 inch rim, M/T makes a 28 x 9 x 15. Running the 7 inch rim may force you to run more air pressure to keep the rear end stable, and won't hook quite as well as an 8inch rim.

I agree a 9x28 will fit, but if you only want to run a 7" rim, go with an 8x28. Putting a 9" tire on a 7" rim is gonna put the side wall real close to the wheel well. You really want the widest rim you can get in there. I ran my 275 radials on a 10" rim

The car is a 69 road runner. The tires I have on it that ran 13.04 @ 110mph were p285/70r15 BF Goodrich Radial T/A street/all season tires. These tires are 30.7" tall.
I want to get a set of slicks for the car,but I don't really know what works best.I am GREEN when it comes to drag racing.I have an extra pair of 15x7 steelies here and thought they would be good to mount some slicks on.
I would like to have the tallest tire possible because I like the looks, and I thought that the smaller the tire in circumference, the slower the speed. That's why I did not go with a p275/60r15, which is 28 inches tall.Am I correct in this?
My goal is to have my car get into the low twelves.I can tell you my engine combo on request. What do you all suggest?

Yeah i would still go with the 9 x 28. It should work well with the rear gear, unless your shifting it really low... What RPM is it happy to shift at?

I shift it at 5,800 rpm,I tried shifting at 6,200 rpm but the car slowed down.
I purchased a set of 29.5x10.5-15 off of cl last week, but I think they are too big!(for my rims anyway)

383 zero decked,906 heads(cc'd to.78,2.14/1.81 valves)TRW Power-forged 12.5-1 HEAVY dome pistons,rods machined (free floating,w/oil hole in top) 3x2 intake w/vacuum holleys(light vacuum springs)mallory unilite w/msd 6al,hi volume oil pump with 8 qt. pan,Mopar 509 cam,Crane "gold" adjustable rockers & larger pushrods.Oil restrictors in place to heads
I know the build is very old school, but I was on a low budget and there are'nt many options for pistons out there for 383's without spending more than my budget allowed.

i had a very similar combo---this was around 1992 , 70 RR , 383 , the 509 Mp cam ,750 carb, 4- speed , 4:10 gear .

I stuck some used 28 x 9 slicks on it with 15x8 steel wheels and nearly crapped myself . (my first set of drag slicks) . They HOOKED .

..my first couple of questions would be ...1-did u happen to notice what your finish line rpm was when you shifted @ 5800?..and 2- do you have any plans on changing gear ratios..?...you want your finish line rpm to be at least the same or a few hundred over your shift point(assuming your shift point is at the peak power making-rpm with your head/cam/intake combination which by your description of your combo, i would say it's real close.)if you have no plans on changing ratios you can figure out what height now, but if you think you're gonna switch you need to wait and get it back to the track with the new ratio to see where you finish line rpm is.then go from there.

as far as brand of slick i would suggest lookin at a jegs catalog. it shows all the brands and sizes, and they are right there side by side so you can compare sizes and prices.(also have special manual shift sidewall slick designation). ..i've tried just about every brand and i seem to keep goin back to hoosiers..my only complaint with them is that i only get about 70 passes out of them and then they start to go away(lose consistency).

as far as rim width, as stated earlier by Dart1031 you want the widest wheel you can get under there.. i'm currently runnin a 15x7 wheel on my '67 with a 29x9 slick and i've had no issues with stability but you're gonna have to run 14-16lbs.of air in them. i plan on trimming my inner wheel lip flush with the q/panel and use an 8 inch wheel.just haven't gotten that far yet.

hope this helps and isn't a bounch of stuff that u already new..but you said your were GREEN so i'm figuring you don't know some of it.

btw we need pics of that Bird.

Thanks for your help!As far as changing gear ratios,I am not interested in changing anytime soon because I do drive the car a lot.I have a 4:56 ring & pinion that may get used later on down the road.
I haven't figured out how to resize a picture to get one up on Moparts.
