Is there a reason #1 cam bearing is grooved?.

Can't see any reason for this , am i missing something? , seem to remember something a while back regards #1 cam journal being drilled through to the front helping to oil the timing gear ,although i've never seen this on a cam journal

TIA.

Off the top of my head I didnt even remember the number 1 cam bearing being grooved.

But after a trip down stairs to my heated Mega square ft. engine facilty to examine an engine.

Its clear to me that the 1 cam bearing is grooved and fed oil to assist in oiling the cam chain and sprockets. The face of the cam bearing journal also has two slanted downward slots to allow for or assist oil drippage torward said areas. IMO anyways mike

Thanks for taking the trouble to go downstairs , never thought about the 'teardrops' on the front of block face , why would the bearing not be 'notched' toward the front? , seems the oil has a 50/50 chance of going both ways (front & back).

Thanks , gotta agree with you on this one.

All of the early wedges had a non grooved front bearing, Mopar started installing the groove bearing in the early race Hemis and then carried it over into the street Hemi, now some of the bearing companys only make the grooved bearings

The front cam bearing is grooved to ensure adaquate oiling to the front journal since it gets the most loading form the timing gear and chain set as well as torsional thrusting to start and stop the cam in motion under heavy spring loads.

Its more clear to me now. This would be the grooves primary function. The slots directing oil to the sprocket and chain would be its lessor and secondary function.

Thanks Bob, I dont know why I didnt figure that out. mike
