"rat rod" is a over used term ..
There are HOT RODS that just are in primer

See picture ..That is NOT a rat rod ..

The term "rat rod" is a lot like the term "muscle car", there is no agreement on what constitutes either and any attempt to define either becomes a personal opinion.

One defintion opf a rat rod is:
Rat rod - a vehicle with non-critical parts removed, primer-like paints, and period correct parts from a conglomeration of different makes and models.

By that definition a lot of the cars in this thread claimed to be hotrods are rat rods. Think "ratty" looking.

"ratty" looking by your observation , not by the person that owns it

You would never walk up to a person with a
AAR cuda with a flatblack hood and ask him why its not painted would you ?

Trust me, and its only my opinion
go up to this fella or one like it and call it
a "rat rod" ..be careful if you do , cause he will be upset ..rightfully so too

I think if you asked 95% of the guys who have built these cars (and by built I mean built not bought) they would not call these cars "Rat Rods". The term rat rod is something magazines and others have created to describe these cars and most traditional rodders dislike the term. While some builders do go for the unfinished look, be it black primer or whatever, most are just saving the money to buy the next part. The majority of the people I see with these rods that like the rat rod term are guys who bought them that way and are trying to ride the trend.

If the fella in question purposely built the car that way with no intention of ever painting it I would have no problem calling it a rat rod to his face; if he gets upset, well, if the shoe fits.......

well guys, i'm with bigdad, in the thought that "hotrod" is what my humpback is. also, there are a LOT of "rats" that ARE unsafe !. my hump is NOT going to fall into that catagory in any way, shape or form ! i don't know what paint it will get, but the chassis & the underneith of the body will be light "machine gray". that way it will be bright enough to work under when [if] something breaks. and if i ever get going again [ ], progress on it will be shown here so my progress can be critiqued[sp?]. i really like HOT RODS !

I think the difference between a rat rod and a hot rod is in the attitude. Rat rods are usually built to offend the general public and are often built unsafe for that reason. Hot rods may be at different levels of compleation, but were usually built with the intent of improving them from what ever condition they began in. Though my stuff may not be pretty, you can bet it has been improved from the condition it came to me in. (I usually carry pictures). It might not be as nice as some should think it should be, but it has been done within the confines of my budget. If you call my car a rat rod to my face, your likely to recieve a deserved volger responce. If you can't say something nice, just walk away, we will both feel better. Gene

Not to belabor the subject (yea, right) but I am still of the opinion that the origins of the term refer to a "ratty" appearance; be it intentional or due to lack of funds/resources.

If you saw a bum, dirty, unshaven, wearing tattered clothes would you have a problem with describing his appearance as "ratty"? Again, if the shoe fits...........

Matter of fact , no I would not make reference to his appearance..
I'd hand him a buck or two ( do it at least once a week) because ,by the grace of god , I'm not in his position
Not everyone is so judgemental ..

The word "rat rod" they think came from
"Big Daddy" /Ed Roth and his wild t-shirts and creations he made back in the 60's
remember RAT FINK ?

The late Grey Baskerville (former writer/photog of Hot Rod magazine) is credited with using the phrase 1st ..Sadly Grey passed before he was able to define the use of the word
FWIW on your description , Grey would of been driving a rat rod daily ..His old 32 had primer spots , etc

http://www.streetrodderweb.com/milestones/0309sr_1932_gray_baskerville_ford_roadster/index.html

And if you knew the value of this car today
be it historical , or emotional or the TRUE,
REAL, VALUE of it .. You would be shocked

No, you call cars with what title you prefer.
I'm just trying to save people a uncomfortable
moment when you offend a owner

Some may not be so understanding ..

Point taken, but Grey's car was originally built without the primer spots and even with them is still well detailed and mostly presentable; not purposely built to look "ratty" as some examples you present are/were.

Well, thanks for your blessing; I will continue to do that with or without your permission.

luckily, i'm not one to easily be offended. lots of interesting opinions on this topic. safety is utmost of importance regardless of the outwardly appearance. budget is also a concern. anyway, i like hot rods !

I thought a ratrod was anytime you put a BB Chevy into a MOPAR.
