No need to tag them with any other title

The term "rat rod" is a lot like the term "muscle car", there is no agreement on what constitutes either and any attempt to define either becomes a personal opinion.
One defintion opf a rat rod is: Rat rod - a vehicle with non-critical parts removed, primer-like paints, and period correct parts from a conglomeration of different makes and models.
By that definition a lot of the cars in this thread claimed to be hotrods are rat rods. Think "ratty" looking.
I think if you asked 95% of the guys who have built these cars (and by built I mean built not bought) they would not call these cars "Rat Rods". The term rat rod is something magazines and others have created to describe these cars and most traditional rodders dislike the term. While some builders do go for the unfinished look, be it black primer or whatever, most are just saving the money to buy the next part. The majority of the people I see with these rods that like the rat rod term are guys who bought them that way and are trying to ride the trend.

Well, if you feel like making rude comments on someone elses car .. Go for it
I was brought up a little different, thats all
Not to belabor the subject (yea, right) but I am still of the opinion that the origins of the term refer to a "ratty" appearance; be it intentional or due to lack of funds/resources.
If you saw a bum, dirty, unshaven, wearing tattered clothes would you have a problem with describing his appearance as "ratty"? Again, if the shoe fits...........

Matter of fact , no I would not make reference to his appearance.. I'd hand him a buck or two ( do it at least once a week) because ,by the grace of god , I'm not in his position Not everyone is so judgemental ..
The word "rat rod" they think came from "Big Daddy" /Ed Roth and his wild t-shirts and creations he made back in the 60's remember RAT FINK ?
The late Grey Baskerville (former writer/photog of Hot Rod magazine) is credited with using the phrase 1st ..Sadly Grey passed before he was able to define the use of the word FWIW on your description , Grey would of been driving a rat rod daily ..His old 32 had primer spots , etc

And if you knew the value of this car today be it historical , or emotional or the TRUE, REAL, VALUE of it .. You would be shocked
No, you call cars with what title you prefer. I'm just trying to save people a uncomfortable moment when you offend a owner
Some may not be so understanding ..

Point taken, but Grey's car was originally built without the primer spots and even with them is still well detailed and mostly presentable; not purposely built to look "ratty" as some examples you present are/were.

Well, thanks for your blessing; I will continue to do that with or without your permission.
