Hey, I've got a '70 440 6pak. I'm trying to figure out the best way/how to limit the advance in the distributor? I keep reading that 34-38 total in is the best setup, but that these distributors have as much as 45 degrees total adv. Any one that can explain how to do this and/or post/send some pics would be greatly appreciated.

Do you have the newer MP or older unit. The new ones have brass colored rotor shaft. The new ones basically have Mallory guts. Mallory sells a spring/key kit to adjust the mechanical advance. You loosen 2 screw and use the keys, marked in degrees to set the mechanical timing.

The only way to adjust the new style is to weld up the slots. A member has a chart that specs how long a slot for so many degrees.

Yes that's what I meant. It was really early in the morning.

Go to FBO website, they sell a wheel that fits in the distributor with 4 sets of slots that the weight pins slide in. No welding reuqired.

How can you tell if you have an old or the new type MP distributor?

Quickest way is to tell is to pull the rotor. If it has a brass colored rotor shaft it's the newer style. This is of course, the vacuum advance units.

I have a MP distributor that I bought new about 8 years ago. It ended up having 59* of total timing. There is two screws under the rotor, Torx I think, I loosened them and could move an adjustable stop to limit total timing, then tighten the screws back up. Its been that way now for several years in the pulling truck.
