has anyone ever experienced any whining noises coming from the accessory drive on a caravan? our '06, if driven at highway speeds for an extended period of time (greater than an hour) develops a noticeable whine on the passengers side. it varies with engine speed, not road speed, and it is very noticable in the cabin, but barely audible outside of the vehicle.

vehicle has 47k miles on it, I replaced the idler pulley last winter about 8k ago thinking that was it. it seemed to go away for a while, but it's back now. it seems to be more pronounced in cold weather. I'm thinking either power steering or water pump, since they're on the rear of the engine.

any help is appreciated.

It could also be the tensioner pulley. I usually try to get a mech stethescope as close to the pully mounting area as possible to pin point the noise. Not easy with the engine running

that's what I assumed last winter, and that's why I replaced the tensioner pulley...the new one has less than 10k miles on it, I wouldn't expect it to go bad that quick.....

Did you replace the Ideler pully or Tebsioner pullt? They are different

Some engines don't have ideler pullies.

whoops, screwed up the original post. I replaced the tensioner pulley last go around. the I pulled the idler pulley off and couldn't hear any noise when spinning it and spun smooth. the tensioner pulley was a little more suspect at that time, I didn't really hear any noise, but when you spun it it felt rougher than the idler pulley.

power steering issue probably , try to flush fluid , type 4 mopar , and jab a hole thru the screen in p.s. resevior .Screen gets pluged and starves pump sometimes .

I had a 94 caravan with a 3.8 and I thought it was the tensioner pulley also but it turned out to be the water pump. It was a easy fix.
I sent more time trying to purge the air out of the system than replacing the pump.

My 2002 had a whine noise when engine temp was up and it turned out to be the alternator.

I almost bought a tensioner but I noticed the weep hole had some leakage and I had a lifetime warranty on the pump so I replaced it and the noise stopped.

was it more or less noticable inside the vehicle compared to outside?

It needs the power steering resovior replaced and fluid flushed. There is a filter in the resovior and after you drive it for a while it is plugging the filter and starving the pump for fluid, after you shut it off the fluid drains back and cleans the filter back out untill you drive it again.

All good advice. The alternators on the newer Caravans have also given me some noises. It has a roller clutch in the pulley and it can make different kinds of noise. The one I hear alot it noise when you shut the eng off. But I had a few cause a whine type noise with the eng running. Ron

yeah, not sure that's it...you can barely hear it outside the vehicle, but it is very noticable inside.

I'll try dig into it this weekend, does the whole reservoir need to be replaced, or just the filter?

Rockauto shows a couple different power steering filters on their website, that look like this

You need to replace the whole resovoir,it is white round piece where you fill the fluid. It is fairly cheap from dealership. There is a screen that is internal, with the fluid out of it you can see it.
