Well, just got a call from a buddy that is on his way to check out a 1970 440-6 pak longblock and wanted to know if it's an original one or not. Nothing on the outside except intake, manifolds and oil pan. I'm at work so I dint have access to my info, so is there any info I can text him for the engine id? Was told there was an HP2 on the pad, but I'm sure there is more to it than that.

I thought the only way to tell for sure, was to confirm that the stamped VIN on the engine matches a known 440-6 pak car.

Check the damper to see if it's a 6-pak crank.
Not that it actually verifies the BLOCK, per se....

(IF) it's from a 70/71 Six pack, then it will have a different harmonic balancer - take picture of it or see if you can find numbers on it.

Check pad on top of block to make sure its a 440 HP Block (get all numbers on top of this pad: D440...e440...F440...etc...)

Check Vin number stamp on pad (side of block).

Check casting dates on the side of the block as well.

All of things will (help) ensure it's a real 6-pack engine, but the only way for sure is if the VIN matches a 6-pack car.

Don't be tooooo discouraged if it's not a real 6-pack engine. It still might be a good 440 HP engine and worth buying (if the price is right).

Good luck

Miguel as noted there's no way to be certain unless the VIN matches a known sixpack car. But, if the block has never been rebuilt it should have a 3 bolt cam sprocket and the pistons should have 4 valve reliefs. Once you build the engine those items are gone so I would not pay a premium for the engine even if it was a 6V.

The only problem with that statement is that ALL 70/71 440 HP engines were EXTERNAL BALANCED so they to will have that specific BALANCER ... they will ALSO be STAMPED HP and/or HP2 , they will also that the HEMI 6qt pan. so unless he is able to DISASSEMBLE the engine , and it has to be factory ORIGINAL , there isn't an easy way to tell by LOOKING at it unless the sellers has a VAILD and REAL title to a V code car .

Unless the pad on top of the engine pad indicated it was a (69) or more specifically a 69 1/2 six Pack engine which was internally balanced.

Either way...I wouldn't get too excited if it was a real six pack engine, it still wouldn't bee any more valuable than a regular 440HP block...

UNLESS IT HAD THE SAME VIN AS MY 70 CHallenger
In which case I would gladly double his investment.

Well yes, if it happened to match my 70 Superbee I might pay a little extra for it as well.

He needs to check the VIN on the side of the block and see if it matches any of the cars in Barry's registry... Who knows, the guy might really have a 6-pack block and make someone a nice gift this Christmas....and someone else a nice finder's fee.
