Thought it was black plastic?
No, they are not black plastic. I've taken whats left of the black off to repaint them. I have two sets of lenses so I can reference the other set for accuracy.

They should be gloss black, maybe one of the new plastic fusion paints from Krylon or someone? I used semi gloss on mine and don't forget the new tail light gaskets
I'll look into the Krylon paints. I bought the gasket set long ago. I'm set in that area.

Sounds like you got the black covered, so I'll add a little tip I have used many times on taillite lenses. Clean and glassbead the lenses, then have them clear-coated. They look like new and it should help the black adhere a little better.
Master, again and still
