thats way too much money. I just got a non running (74 actually) complete 400 eng for $150 (locally) and a bare 400 block for $60 (craigslist) & I was the only one who called. any year 400 will work fine & if sinking alot into it sonic checking is always a good idea. I'd definitely go BB as a stroked SB will have 408 cubes and this is a small BB cubewise. Granted it will handle better & an easier fit & the rotating assy might be a bit lighter but I think a 451 or a 470 B will make you MUCH happier for your time/money.

Hummm You'll notice the responses are from WAY outta the So Cal area. You can still find 400 blocks here but they're not common or cheap. FWIW. I paid less than that for a '73 400 block shipped from back east (from a Moparts member) after my local search failed for my 451 build. Most common explanation for our drought was the oil companies buying 70's cars for pollution credits in the mid 80's if you're old enough to remember. Bottom line, you can find a better price, I'm sure. Just may not be tomorrow... Have you ask the local Mopar guys if they have any leads? Happy hunting

Thats what I was thinking so cal will not the same as the rest of the country when it comes to used stuff. Ill keep scanning all the ads maybe I will get lucky.
SB vs BB I dont want to use the original 340 engine so I will have buy all new supporting parts headers, intake, heads so my thinking was the potential is alot higher with bigger cubes. I am a SB fan but it seems cheaper to go big to go fast. The low block weights less than RB and has a lower rotating mass also. Can go up to 500ci
SB - I need block, heads, intake, headers, 904 BB - "Same as above" BB 727 motor mounts , seems pretty close part by part

Last two 400's I've bought... $50 for a 74 long block (minus carb); $75 for a 71 "230" block and caps, magnafluxed and fresh bored @ .040.
LemonWedge - Street heavy / Strip ready - 11.07 @ 120
