Let me start off by saying, I had a 98 12 valve, 5 speed 4x4 that was tweaked. No black ball of smoke out the tail pipe. 30 psi of boost. The thing hauled a_ _. I would love to own a new diesel, but don't have the funds. This is what I'm getting. A one owner 2000 Dodge 2500 extended cab 4x4 with 80K and a v10. Its a nice truck and its 7k. I won't drive it much. He said he was getting 12 in town and 16 highway. It has 3.54 gears. Anybody getting that on there V10 Dodge? Thanks Terry Dodge

I only wish mine got that kind of mileage. I have a 98 with 110k on it, 3.54 gears, 4X4, quad cab 2500 with optional 1 ton front axle. The best I have ever gotten was 12 on the highway. Around town I generally get between 8 and 10. If I hook a load to it and tow anything, I get 7 to 8. It will pull anything you put behind it, but it wont pass a gas station either. I have had it looked at 2 or 3 times and they always say nothing is wrong with it.

I still have a 99' that I bought new in December 98'. I pull a 26' enclosed trailer weighing about 9K loaded. When the truck was new and still running the 2.45 rubber the truck ran from 9 to 11 mpg. It also runs a 2.54 gear. I changed wheels and tires going to a 2.85 tire which is somewhere around 3 inches taller, killed my gear ratio. Pulling the trailer the mileage is in the 7.5 range. The truck does fine on the flats but, due to the tire change now, struggles in long inclines. I only occasionally make long pulls so it is not a big deal. I must also add that I only put 5K miles a year on and I do love my truck! I could'd justify the extra 5K for the truck when new and don't like the diesel noise and smell. I would say it all depends on what your needs are and what you want to put up with.

I ordered a new V10 2500 2wd club cab long bed automatic in 1995 and drove it for 4 years before trading it in on a 2000 4x4 shortbed 1500 5.9 gas. The V10 got 12-13 in town and 8-9 towing, and I was able to get 17 on the highway, but that was at 60, anything over that and the mileage dropped considerably. Since then I have had a 2004 Cummins 24V 4x4 (which I just blew up at 169K miles) but honestly I liked the V10 for trailering better than the diesel, and I currently drive a 2007 6.7 6-speed 3500 and several other diesel trucks. A few weeks after the diesel threw a rod I bought a 2001 2500 quadcab long box V10 5-speed with only 8K original miles! It was ordered by and old guy to tow his 5er camper but he died shortly after he got it and his wife couldn't drive it so she traded it in and it sat on a dealer lot for 6 years! I have only put about 1K miles on it and it get about the same mileage my 96 got, though I do like the 5 speed alot better. If you can keep your foot out of it (tough thing to do with the power and torque) you can get decent mileage. You WILL love the towing power though, for sure!

The funny thing about science is that if you change one miniscule parameter you change the entire outcome to the way you want it.
