I ordered a new V10 2500 2wd club cab long bed automatic in 1995 and drove it for 4 years before trading it in on a 2000 4x4 shortbed 1500 5.9 gas. The V10 got 12-13 in town and 8-9 towing, and I was able to get 17 on the highway, but that was at 60, anything over that and the mileage dropped considerably. Since then I have had a 2004 Cummins 24V 4x4 (which I just blew up at 169K miles)
but honestly I liked the V10 for trailering better than the diesel, and I currently drive a 2007 6.7 6-speed 3500 and several other diesel trucks. A few weeks after the diesel threw a rod I bought a 2001 2500 quadcab long box V10 5-speed with only 8K original miles!
It was ordered by and old guy to tow his 5er camper but he died shortly after he got it and his wife couldn't drive it so she traded it in and it sat on a dealer lot for 6 years!
I have only put about 1K miles on it and it get about the same mileage my 96 got, though I do like the 5 speed alot better. If you can keep your foot out of it (tough thing to do with the power and torque) you can get decent mileage. You WILL love the towing power though, for sure!
