Wondering what the stock specs are on a 440 camshaft. What was the best year for the 440 as far as performance and hp/tq ratings? And which are better, closed chamber or open chamber heads?

Closed chambers will give you more CR, so they should it be the best option.

best 440 ? 67 to 70 years some ppl says earliers with mechanical lifters, some other will say with hyds

Earliers are with closed chambers too.

for camshaft specs ( 70 specs are pretty much the same than earliers ):

Aren't you the one that lectured us on how MP cams were the hot ticket?

If so you already know the answers, so why ask?

If not, then disregard this.

I want my fair share

open or closed, which is better? better for what? Closed increases compression, but unless you find some HP 67's you're suffering small valves Later open chambers have hardened seats so just a minimal amount of work to have good street heads... Depends on what you're after??? 69.5 sixpack is arguably the best of the factory built 440's (low tapper cam used in that year only.) All VERY subjective....opinions WILL vary

Let me be a little more in depth, I know the comp ratio will increase with closed chamber. As far as performance, air flow, valves, etc.? I've currently got a set of 452's and a lot of guys have been saying those were the really popular heads in the 70's because of their larger air flow and larger valves. Whether this is true, I do not know.

Another question, is it true that in the early to mid 70's, chrysler used 6 pack rods in a lot of the 440's cause they had leftover parts after emission laws killed big blocks? Had a buddy tell me to check 440's in RV's from that era cause its possible they may have them.

There's a pretty good article about the BB heads (google it)... Conclusion, untouched, they all(EDIT open chamber) flow very similar (IMO the difference could be made up in a good valve job ) Yeah, you can find sixpack bottom ends in other places, but why bother? Those rods are God awful heavy! The standard "LY" rods will hold plenty of power, and IF you need more than that, the cost of after market I or H beam rods still makes more sense then 6BBl rods.

You are a liar.

https://board.moparts.org/ubbthreads/show...part=1&vc=1

I knew it was you.

Why the deception?

Are you looking to get people to say what they think is the best 440 so you can fight with them?

Geez.

Good point. But if I did come across them it be more for nostalgia and probably get a pretty penny for them.

I have raced with closed chamber 516's---915's..906's and 452's.........915's have a bad hump in the floor area....they dont flow as well as 906's.....plus both of them have soft seats...don't mess with either....Get a set of 346s and newer--452's are good..they have a much better port quality to work with than 906's..better castings.....

The key here is to mill them down.......MIll about .060 or so off them to get the quench area down to about .043....then run a piston that gets to the top...a 6pack piston is fine...especially in lower lift cams--you are wasting money if you spend more on lighter pistons for the rpms you will be turning....

Dont run a stock cam...There are much better grinds out there that have stock specs..Comp has one...and I use "Bullet" ..I have ran Racer Brown cams..i consider those the best.....

but dont wast your time on finding 915's....you have to take a lot out to get bigger valves in...and they dont flow as well as a 452 with equal porting.......

Too bad those companies can't hold a candle to dear old MP At least so says our "expert" on the subject.
