Looking to upgrade my ignition system this winter. I've been looking at the different distributor options. Mainly looking at Pertronix, MSD and Mallory. I currently have iron heads but am also looking to upgrade to Edelbrocks within the next year.

The Pertronix information suggests that their distributor won't fix with aftermarket heads, so I've ruled that one out. I know I'd like something with easy-to-adjust mechanical advance and I'd also like to have vacuum advance, since this is a 95% street car that could see some occasional strip time.

Anyone have any opinions on what the best option would be for me and any experience with fit using aftermarket heads.

My previous 440 had the E heads with MSD Pro Billet (no vacuum advance) setup, so I know that fits and worked well. Going to the MSD with vacuum advance (they call it ready to run) cost an extra $100, which seems a bit pricey ($369 for distributor alone through summit).

I'm looking to run with a CD Ignition box that has some sort of rev limiter (4-spd without it makes me a bit nervous)

Thanks

Send sunroofGTX a PM. The Firecore wire guys are coming out with bunch of different distributors this winter. Rich assured me they are awesome.

I bought this Mallory dist cheap as it was brand new and my brother had it. He decided to go with MSD and sold it to me cheap and I love it. It has adjustable mech advance and it has worked flawless for me. Ron

I used a pertronix billet " plug and play" on my 440... I had to grind some material off of my 915 heads to make it work, vacuum advance is NOT adjustable, and all the mopar guys make fun of my cap..

It works well, very clean with black cap and stock looking wires, top of shaft has a bearing instead of stock mopar bushing. No wires to a "box" that my car never had ( 67 Bbody) running 12 volts to the Pertronix FT II coil.... Simply hooked it up to each side of the coil and run it.

Call Don @ FBO. His stuff is nice. Our distributors will not be out until spring. If you can wait, I assure you ours will be well worth the wait. The ready to runs will most likely be the most popular. No ignition box needed, and hook it up tou coil, then you geta hot a$$ spark going to our wires..

This is what I did and it works great. I have a chrysler distibutor with adjustable mech advance. I don't use the vaccum. Added a MSD 6al with hotter spark. To get the hotter spark you need to re-gap your plugs like the book said. I took my plugs from .035 to .045. To finish you NEED to weld the plates inside the distributor together. If you don't the plate with the pick-up on it can bounce around changing the air gap causing a high rpm miss, and it will. I read (along time ago) that this will take your dist from one of the worst to one of the best. You won't need to spend alot of money. Also use the MSD coil and by pass the ballast.

I did the same exact thing with a Chrysler distributor and it works flawless just like Cuda67 said.
Though if I were to go with an after market unit, then look no further than SunroofGTX and his hench men. Their wires are the hot set up, so the distributors coming out should be just as good.

By no box do you mean "none", or just use the Mopar Box? If the latter I'm in

Zero ignition box , on our Ready to Run only. The tall distributor hooks right into the MSD's. They will be ready in the Spring. Thanks Lee..

Don at FBO just testing this thing for a week. He loves it. Not sure right now on the total, but there will be tune kits available. Sorry we have to wait until spring.

I say save some money and buy the Mopar Performance distributor (it has Mallory internals)...it also has an adjustable vacuum advance and adjustable mech advance too. And only $180....

You will be able to use both caps on our distributors. Both our HEI style, and the tan or black Chrysler Electronics..
