I will be putting the heads back on soon and looking to put a leak free setup on the first time. Al heads are being milled and can get any finish i need on them. The block will still have a rough type of finish. you can clearly see the cut marks in the deck. Some say put a Cometic on , but i have read a lot of post with leaking oil / water and Cometic in the same sentence. I had a Fel Pro Composite on , but it leaked around the water passages and the pushrod holes were too small. ( i understand that is still an issue. ) I spoke to a noted engine builder about the Fel Pros and he did not reccomend them as the fire ring is too hard to compress properly and will cause leaking around the water passages. I see that Arruzza sells a gasket made by "Best Gasket" that he swears will solve the leaking isseue. compressed thickness is .049. and they have silicon around all the important holes. So, what do you guys use on a rough block and a "to be determined" finish head?

Ran into the same issue (among many others). I see your checking the "quench". A bit tricky to obtain and keep a streetable comp ratio (although you can do wonders with custom pistons, a little math, a mill and a lathe).
FWIW Cometics solved my problem, but I had the proper finish put on the heads and block when I had it apart last year. Tim Banning recommended putting a little "Right Stuff" around the oil passages and water passages. I took them apart and sprayed the front and back side with Hylomar blue. All I can say is I have zero leaks. The gaskets I used were .027" thick (to get more "quench") and they had no exhaust push rod holes.
The guys I know at a near by shop used to dyno the crate engines from Cummins. They took a couple of heads off some Hemis and found they sprayed the Fel-pro gaskets with some sort of red sealer which I think is some kind of Permatex sealer.
Not sure about Arruzza's gaskets. I've talked to him before. Very easy to talk to an knowledgeable. The only thing is that those gaskets might be too thick.

ditto for the cometic, .027,( although tork, not sure what you mean by no holes for exhaust push rods???).
little bit of "the right stuff" in the right places, and they seal up just fine.
Hey mick,
I'm going by memory, but as I recall, one of the set of push rod holes was missing from the gasket (pretty sure it was the exhaust. Instead of a hole, the gasket was countoured around the push rod. They might be specials that Tim Banning has made but I think they are to help relieve some of the clearance problems around the push rods.
